Anyone heard of chevy making afermarket parts??
there have been rumors, but so far nothing offficial, GM perf div. will probably release something IF the car sells well, but it will more than likely not be in the first 2 production years. Just my guess but if they did it would proably resemble the performance #'s from the SEMA SS sedan, (230hp) but this is just my imagination running wild.
well, i was reading in the edition of modifed mag i just picked up tonight, and here is your def. answer:
(sorry, no scanner, so i will just write the article out)
Chevy Launches Entry-level
Cobalt Sport Compact Dragster
Chevrolet broadened its 2005 sport compact drag program with the introduction of the new cobalt phase 5 dragster. "We have crated a car that racers can build in their own shops using available parts," explained Carmen Smith, GM Racing program manager for sport compact drag racing, from SEMA 2004 where the cobalt phase 5 was unveiled. The phase 5 cobalt used a turbocharged 2.2L ecotec motor that's been modified to produce 535hp while retaining 65% of the production engine parts. The race car features GM and aftermarket components, including a race-prepared Hydra-Matic 4T65-E automatic transmission, suspension upgrades and performance electronics. Safety features include a 6 point roll cage, a 6-point safety harness, racing seats, onboard fire suppression system, SFI-spec roll bar padding, crushable steering column and steering wheel-mounted transmission controls. Many components of the phase 5 package are available from GM peformance parts, including a ported ecotec cylinder head, competition cam shafts, adjustable camshaft drive gears, neutral balance shafts, and a race-prepared transmission. The rea suspension is a bolt-on assembly from the cobalt ss supercharged with an upgraded sway bar, 5-bolt hubs and disc brakes Items such as the turbocharger, engine management system, struts, shock absorbers and safetly equipment are availbale from aftermarket suppliers. It is anticipated that some independent teams will race the cobalt phase 5 in 2005. An instruction manual is available to guide enthusiast through the step-by-step modicications to prepare a production cobalt for quarter-mile competition. Chevy will also compete in the marquee pro FWD and hot rod classes in 2005.
so while not ALL the parts are from gm, a few will be available
