Smoke from under the hood
Smoke from under the hood
Need help guys just got the car back from dealership had a coolant issue and transmission and clutch replaced. Dealership stated that the supercharger radiator has a hole and needed replaced???????? Got the car back last night and the smoking is even worse the smoke does not seem to be white in color but more like blue it is coming from just behind the driver headlamp around where the upper radiator hose is. Anyways what is the deal with this supercharger radiator sorry just starting to work and understand engines can someone explain the cobalt radiator system I do notice that the radiators seem to be seperated into 3 what is that all about. Any help would be great
thanks RYAN

perhaps "supercharger radiator" = heat exchanger. The thing built into the intake manifold (what the SC bolts to)
Check the coolant level in the little filler tube up front... you'll know if you are low.

bluish white is usually oil. what does the smoke smell like? is it a lot, or just a little bit? i would open the hood and take a look to see where it's coming from exactly. maybe they spilled a little coolant and it's burning off?
coolant smells kinda sweet when it burns... and oil, smells like oil. if it is bluish, there's either an oil leak somewhere, or same thing as above. when they changed the tranny or whatever else they spilled a little oil.
i would keep an eye on your temps, look for the car driving differently, be aware of smells and smoke. they may have spilled something and didn't want to tell you. i did my gf's oil last week, and the place that did it he-manned the damn oil filter and it was smaller than oem so my wrench didn't work on it. had to do the ole screwdriver trick. so i told her that probably for the first day or 2 the car will smoke and it will smell like the engine is going to blow up (she wouldn't know what oil smells like) so when that happened she didn't get nervous. a shop probably wouldn't tell you the same though.
but i would double check everything. if all else fails, take it back to the shop.

could also be the oils burning off of a new part. happens alot when you put new parts on, smell funny for a while.
i don't know how long it would last honestly. depends on whether it's a leak or a spill, and if it was a spill depends how much it is. i would call the shop that did it, maye they will have more input.
if you open the radiator cap, (with the car cold, if the car is at normal running temp the coolant will boil and shoot out. that would not be fun) you should be able to see some coolant in there.

How long do you think it would take to burn got 1.5 hrs driving on it since it came from the shop. Does not smell like oil smoke i would say is moderate coming from between the two radiators but they said they replaced the whole supercharger radiator so wonder what is going on
Are you talking about the coolant over flow near the fuse box or is their another place to look up near the radiator itself
thanks

Yeah just got off the phone with the shop the service writer has no idea not sure if he is just a paper pusher or not. Has to be still leaking while driving last night when stoping at stop sign/lights the HID's really show the smoke coming from the front right now they cannot look at it till Wed the new tranny and clutch work really well. The clutch pedal has extremely little play and I only have to push the clutch about 1.5 inchs to the floor alot different from before on stock clutch. Does that clutch play sound right for a stg II + clutch
cheers

not necesarily. but without knowing where and why it's smoking, not worth the chance.
if i were you, i would get back on the phone and tell them that if they fucked up yoru car, and you have to wait till wednesday for an appointment, that's a load of horse ****.

There are several coolers. The 3 you're mentioning are probably the regular radiator, the heat exchanger for the supercharger and either the condenser or the trans cooler for the last.
What I think it is is just grease on some hot part from the mechanic's hands. The only other thing I can think of that might cause the smoke in that area is possibly a freshly painted supercharger?
Another thing, it could be brake fluid burning off. When they changed your clutch they disconnected your slave cylinder and had to refill your hydraulic clutch system when they got it back togeather(alot like bleeding brakes) and could have spilled some fluid. Could also be related to your clutch issue.
I would just wait till they can take the car back in. Keep an eye on your temps and make sure you don't overheat. Check your oil occasionally. If it blows up, have the shop buy you a new engine and pay to have another, better shop put it in
