SS to get Turbo?
SS to get Turbo?
I was reading about the new Pontiac Solstice getting the 2.2 Ecotec turbocharged
so i was wondering if you think GM will put this engine in the Cobalt SS to replace our supercharged model?
Its a entirely different way to put more power on a engine for sure but who know?

GO TURBO!
ive always been under the impression the 2.0 s/c motor was only going to be around a limited time
and was going to be changed in a few years
but with all rumors , its still to early to tell yet

GM's Lori Queen said from the get go , before the Cobalt SS was out, that the supercharger would be short lived . Think back to the timeframe of the Cobalt colored 1st showcar of the SS , I think it was in 2004 .
Again for anyone wondering the fate of the Cobalt SS and changes made , pay close attention to the Ion replacement , which is a Opel Astra . You are likely gonna hear all about that car before updates to the Cobalt . That car will be built alongside the Cobalt at lordstown ( Springhill will be one those 12 GM plants getting shut down ) . The Opel Astra VXR , which would be the Redline equivelent , is currently powered by a 240hp 2.0 turbocharged eco . With the market appeal Saturn is shooting for with their entire portfolio , and the fact that it's fact Saturn will become the American arm of the Opel division , its not very likely the new Ion will retain the 2.0 SC eco .
Also , when this was brought up before ....a common comment was "why would GM abandon the 2.0 SC engine after only 2 years in the Cobalt?" Remeber though , the 2.0 SC was done deal and in production in the Redline before the Cobalt SS was released . The SS version of the engine with the exception of the location of the maf and some pcm calibration changes was unchanged . By the time the new Ion is released (2007 as a 2008 ) the 2.0 SC will have been in production for 4 complete model years . How plausable does the change sound now
All of GM's future development with the ecotec , save for the GMPD aftermarket stg1 and stage 2 kits for the SC engine , are with turbochargers .

The only reason I could see the 2.0 Ecotec getting a turbo is because Saab has proven one already. But I wouldn't be so quick to count the supercharger out.
The Cobalt is not getting a Turbo. Why would they just now be releasing staged kits for the 2.0L Supercharged if they were going to replace it in six months? Think about what you are saying! These rumors are all BS. Last I heard, the Solstice was getting our LSJ instead of a turbo!!!
There is no way the Cobalt will get a Turbo. The supercharger is here to stay for a few years at least!

Turbo Ecotec would replace the supercharged version I bet.
Again , keep a hawk eye in the new ION . It will spill the beans on the Cobalt
And in case everyone hasnt noticed , the superchargers are dissappearing . The only SC model left besides the 2006 Grand Prix GT is the Cobalt and Ion . The 3800 is a dead motor next year , and goes with it is its S/C .

yeah if the ss/sc would have been turbo i would have bought it but i dont think supercharger are that good on a small engine, turbo for gm would be a step in the right direction to pull more of the import croud over to the america car like the srt 4 did

the 2.0 s/c motor , is from the saab 9-3 turbo , with a s/c instead of the turbo
the problem with adding boost to the 2.4 is the VVT
