what exhaust?
no matter what, a single exhaust is always gonna create more power on a 4-cyl for two reasons. The first being, no 4-cyl NEEDS a dual exhaust. The few 4-cyls that come w/ dual exhausts (Tiburon 4-cyl, Mazdaspeed 6, S2000) have it for cosmetic purposes only. Secondly, the less bends and the straighter the piping, the better backpressure flow the exhaust will have, which in turn will make your more power. Really, even most V6's don't need a dual exhaust, which is why they make single exit exhausts for lots of popular cars that come from the factory with dual exhausts, like Tiburon V6's, 350Z's, G35s, etc. And like the aforementioned S2000, its more popular to replace the dual exhaust with a single exit than it is to put an aftermarket dual exhaust on. So all in all, the performance difference between a dual and single on our cars will be minimal, but if your after that last drop of extra performance, go single.
Just make sure its a 2.5" for a 2.4. I've seen lots of 2.4's run a 2.25" exhaust, and IMO, thats a bit small for a larger 4-cyl like a 2.4. Corsa, ARK, Magnaflow and Megan all offer a nice 2.5" cat-back.
Hrm unless its a inline 6 im pretty shure any engine with a V pattern benifits the most form a true duel setup with some sort of X or H Pipe for scavaging purposes v/s a single exhaust. That being said often times people with FWD V6s run single exhaust because its harder than it sounds to run duel exhaust due to clearance issues.
