Someone screwed up at the dealership.......

Okay here's the story...
I was in a fender bender a few weeks ago.
Some dumb ass rearended me while I was stopped at a light.
Thank god he was insured.

So I took the car to his insurance adjuster (Geico) to get an estimate.
They estimated about $2500 in damage and mailed me a check for the repairs.

I took the car back to my dealership for repair.
Once they started fixing it, they found about a $1000 more in damage.
Geico is supposed to send my dealership a check for the differance, I had to sign a release form so Geico could do so.

Car was in the shop for 2-3 weeks.

When I went to pick my car up, I looked over some paperwork, signed the release form for Geico. Then they gave me my keys. I asked "is that it?" and they said yea.

So I headed outside and took my car home, happy to have it back.

The thing is, my dealership never asked for payment from me!
So basically, I have an extra $2500 in my bank account, that was supposed to pay to my dealership.
Now if they don't call and ask for it, or send me a bill or anything...
At what point do I consider this MY money????

i think its worth a shot holding onto it
if they ask give it back
but i think its a rip sometimes
when i sent my camaro in to be fixed when i was hit from the side...my body shop was able to get 6500 bucks out of metlife auto...it only costed them about 2 grand to fix it...so it kinda pissed me off i wasnt able to get the check and then pay them...i woulda made out like a bandit then

that is true is the right thing to do. But it will be sweet if they never notice just wait a while and act stupid i guess. I had a similar scenario when i purchased my balt the dealership never took my down payment which was 7,000. And it went down in the records as if the down payment was given. I told my dad when do we give them the money my dad was like jajjaaj they forgot to ask for it what a *******, but we just went back and said you forgot to collect the down payment the guy just laughed like and idiot.

Yea of course contacting them is the right thing to do, but thats a nice bundle of cash.
Could pay for a full exhaust and then some : )
They'll prolly call me soon anyway but I can hope.
It's been 3 or 4 days so far.

when your insurance co. gets a bill from the dealer for the remaining $2500, A: they will come after you, B: add it to your insurance bill

Hate to say it, someone will eventually notice & get there $ somehow.

What dealer was it anyways?

just keep it until they ask for it. they WILL ask for it, so just wait, it's less work (just don't spend it).

I would Go give the money to them....only beacause if i had that in my account, i would spend it. Even if it takes 2-3 months, are you ganna have that amount of cash to give them, if you spend it? So if you dont have it you cant spend it.

... what ever happens... don't spend it...
In most cases, they can take up to a year to realize the screw up, and can still ask for it back.

Smartest idea is to put it into a breakable 6 month term at a bank. That way your making interest off it... and if they ask for it back, you won't have any trouble doing so.

it might not show up anywhere until it is cashed .... so holding it alone might mean nothing.... I am not the insurance fraud expert....just some insight about what might happen after holding it for 1,2 or 6 months
if you want take a chance..cash it now, bank the money and see what happens.... you could play stupid and say...."um, I thought it was mine"...."why, do you want to back?"

what will happen is you will think you're in the clear, spend the money, and as soon as you do you'll get the call. then it's coming out of pocket. not worth it. and what happens when the dealer calls the insurance company that they never got a check, and the insurance tracks the check and finds out you cashed it and spent it? bingo, big trouble. not worth it.
