Are my brakes FRACKED? 56k no

Alright well what do you think? After having to slam on the brakes due to someone being really stupid I think they are fucked. Braking feels a tad worst and I feel like it's getting progressivly worst.

So my fellow cobaltss.net members, What do you think?

all depends, you may get lucky and just have to get them turned down, looks ok to me mine used to look like that so i took them into work and turned them down.....one thing wherever you take them they are gonna look at the lip that is created from the outter part of the rotor to the shinny part if its over a certain amount they wont turn them down and force you to get new ones or just keep them the way they are.

What does the surface feel like?

Any pulsating?

Braking feels worse HOW? You could have just glazed the rotors from the hard stop and that effect will go away over time.

Any noises coming from the brakes now?

well the rotors look a bit grooved. have you taken the wheel off to check the brake pads? do they squeal at all? do you feel a wobble or anything when braking?

it looks like you have a serious lip there which leads me to believe your rotors need to be changed and i would change the pads as well cause in most cases they will just put more grooves in the new rotors

mine look similar but they're smooth, just a nice little lip on the edge. also...braking feels ok to me (if not a little less that when I bought the car...which is to be expected..) Anyone know the cut-off point for them to say they wont turn them down?

Brake rotors are going to have grooves from your pads on every car, its almost impossible to tell if brakes are bad by just looking at them. If you feel a vibration in your brake pedal when stopping then they may be warped, but i usually don't replace rotors until the warping gets pretty severe where you definitely can feel it.

Otherwise, how many miles are on your brakes, have you checked your pads lately? Pads are usually what where out and result in lower braking performance. I can't see your pads from your picture.

No pulsating. The brake rotors feel rubbing your had against the sidewalk. The brakes occasionally make a squealing sound and brake performance has defiantly decrease.

I havnt checked the pads latly but the car has almost 16thousand miles on it. But recently I had some close calls and had to slam on the brakes really bad, kinda at a high rate of speed.

I also like the fact that you left school early. How bad are the roads?

i would deffinetly change the pads at least, $25 for the front pads from Advance. have the rotors turned if possible otherwise they are about $40 each.

16k miles shouldn't need a brake change. If you do, you need to change your driving habits. A "few" hard brakes from a high rate of speed won't do that. I took mine out on a road course 3 times doing 140+ to 50 braking CONSTANTLY for an hour and a half and still had 36k on my brakes before they needed changed.

Check your pads to start with. Second check your brake fluid. There's a SLIM chance you might have boiled it if you've done some hard/fast braking. If so it needs changed (should be changed when you change your pads/rotors anyway, just as a precaution). Rotors usually give the least indication of brake wear. You'll see pads wear before rotors MOST of the time.

Again, HOW has braking performance decreased? Longer stopping distance or does the pedal feel spongy? Does it feel like the pads are "slipping" on the rotor? Are you hearing scraping or grinding noises?

looks a little burnt and maybe a few burn spots in the blackened area..which becomes super hard and hard to shave off on the rotor surfacing machine..i think its time for new pads at least minmum and possibly new rotors (mine are warping a 2nd time now after i got them shaved at the dealer under warranty again and i have like 7k-ish miles...13k kms

No slipping from what can tell. Pedal pressure change is not noticeable. Definetly longer braking distance. But the brakes still work fine. Just not as good as what they used to be.

Thats what I thought too.

It was from a 135mph then slamming on the brakes. It wasnt pretty but the cobalt did it's job well.

they actually look somewhat normal. We get about 2 2.4's a month that ome in like that and we en up turning the rotors under warrenty. Id take them to the dealership and have them turn them again and give you a nice new surfae to work with. how many miles do you ahve on the rotors and pads?

I'd say you glazed them, but PROBABLY didn't do much harm to them. Obviously if you're uncomfortable with them, get them checked and/or changed. Brakes are something that can't be evaluated well through pictures.

my rotors look like that but I have plenty of pad and no pulsating...its just where my dumb ass turned them and left hot spots.......if you do have pulsating or decreased performance...the pulsating is where the pad is trying to bite and grabs in some areas but misses in others due to warpage...that'll cause the grooves too and thus the performance decrease in which case....I'd put new rotors on unless u can turn those bad boys and I'd scuff (sand) the pads alot, unless they're worn, but no need to waste and get new pads bc the ceramic stock pads are designed to outlast the rotor....

If they're glazed it will go away. At the end of a track day I've had horrible brake fade to the point of ending the day early (pre-SS lines and pre-HPS pads). I just put blocks on the wheels and let it sit.

Biggest thing to keep in mind if that situation happens again where you do a hard brake from high speeds, or you really beat on the brakes on a curvy road or auto-x, don't let the pads sit on the rotors. Don't set the e-brake on the rears, don't sit at a dead stop with the brakes on. If need be, pull over on a flat surface, put it in gear, shut it down for a few minutes and let the pads and rotors cool off.

I keep a set of these in my car for at the track (or if I'm in a situation where the brakes overheat......I've gone on trips to see family with lots of twisty mountain roads):

I figured that's what I was suppose to do. I pretty much coast everything anyways and after it I let the brakes cooled down.
