What to do...

So heres what I am thinking, and I would most definately appreciate some feed back as I highly value the opinions of the people on this Web site.

So after doing some re-structuring of my finances, turns out I will be able to make a change regarding my Vehicle situation late this summer.

The options I have put out in front of myself are to either:

Trade in my Base-Balt for an SS/SC and go with the GM stage upgrades (If they are ever released) get rid of all the SS Badging, and put on a base model spoiler. (Going for sleeper)

or

Upgrade the Base-Balt, by adding the following:
Turbo 8PSI w/intercooler
Eibach Anti Roll Kit
Borla Exhaust

I am kind of leaning towards just buying the SS/SC, because that way I dont have to worry about the warranty. Not that THAT is all that big of a deal. But that is the Cobalt I wanted when I first saw our cars back in 2004. I had to settle for a Base Model because I hadnt properly organized my finances.

However, the plus side of going turbo on the base, is that I would have a unique vehicle. There arent going to be a whole lot of people with that kind of set up.

I like the idea of having a supercharger because of the power on demand, however, I also like the idea of a turbo because I will (With a light foot) still retain the driveability of the car as it is now, as well as save some gas over supercharging. (No, twin charging is NOT an option, Sorry)

So what do you guys and girls think? Which way should I go, or would be best?
Feel free to tell me why, and mention anything I might have lost sight of.

Thanks in advance!

man go with the SS/SC, mainly because i dont think it will be made more than a couple of years, and thus be worth more down the road. also, you have alot better chance of going fast under warranty with the SC, just my two cents

What do you want out of the car, that makes a huge difference. Do you just want it as a daily driver with some mods? The Base is fine for that. Do you want it for the drag strip? Again, you'd be fine with a turbo charged base model.

If you have any interest whatsoever in getting serious about autocrossing or road racing - get to the dealer immediately and trade in the base model for the SS/SC! You're not just getting engine upgrades, you're getting a MUCH upgraded suspension and braking system. Even at that the SS/SC has a lot of room for improvement in the suspension but you've got a lot better setup to start with than if you start from just a base model.

You make an excellent point! And I guess, I do want it as a daily driver. I dont really do much in the way of racing. I essentially like having the power, but only occasinally use it. But I suspect a LOT of people that buy the SS/SC are the same way. I may hit the drag strip 3 or 4 times a year, but I wouldnt want a full out race car. I DO enjoy racing on the highway after 3:00 AM, but there usually isnt a whole lot of people out then.

So when it comes down to it, I want the power, basically just to have it. The same reason that someone would buy a Muscle car as their daily driver.

Which may seem silly to some, but I am fairly certain most the people on here dont go Auto X'ing either. Not that there is anything wrong with that. I think Auto Cross seperates the "Men from the boys" so to speak.

The other thing I am concerned with, is IF I go with the SS/SC, I dont have to worry about the work done to the car with the stage kits.

Where as when it comes to a turbo, I have to worry about finding someone competant enough to install it and tune it correctly. And then, while I do know a bit about cars, I worry about things going wrong, me not knowing what, and then being at the mercy of a mechanic, where as with a new car, I can just take it to the dealership.

I am learning about cars at a rapid pace, I just not 100% confident enough yet to where I can know for a fact weather some one is blowing smoke up my ass or not.

But, Turbo is still not out of the question, because I still like the benefits of the Turbo.

Sorry for Rambling....

chipsgt I take it you are fairly young....maybe, maybe not. Here is my opinion on your 'quandry'...
Actually, I can see both sides...maybe this will confuse you more, maybe not.
First - stay with what you have. If your finances are in question don't bite off more than you can chew. Pay more towards your loan or use the 'extra' money to buy performance parts. This way you can have a 'unique' car. Not the most exciting solution although if you play your cards right and keep your finances on track you'll be able to afford something like a vette in a few years.
Next - buying the SC will be so much damn fun. Who cares about tomorrow. I autocrossed mine on sunday and I had a blast (beat a WRX, a S2000 and another SC, vettes and other cars). I've raced it at 3am and got my ass smacked a few times and did some smacking. A factory car this good is a BLAST to drive and everyone should have one. All kinds of people like this car....the SRT guys, the Honda guys and so on. I haven't heard a 'I don't like it' from anyone. Its small, got power and did I mention its a BLAST to drive. (the only down side to this is you WILL lose $$$ on your car now)

so, all in all....buy the SC now and be broke for awhile...take advantage of the employee pricing...although I think they may have something else after this expires.

Definately trade in for the SS S/C! You won't regret it! It's a car even an upgraded base can't beat, it just works well together. (Even if it means waiting for Stages...) Well, unless you have a big wallet, or the bank likes you. Then the Base upgraded all around (suspension, engine, interior, appearance) would be a hit on the streets.

Then the SS/SC would be a good choice. Actually either one would be a good choice. Just look into costs. The turbo is going to be expensive, but so is the SS/SC with the stage kits. Also insurance, maintenance, etc. Tires are WAY more expensive on the SS/SC because of the odd size. The OEM tires run almost $200 each (US) on Tire Rack. Just some of the things to keep in mind. You seem to be going about it logically, just make sure you research ALL the possibilities before making a final decision.

Fairly young? Yes, I am 25. I would call that fairly young.

Thanks everyone who has commented thus far! I know I can count on you guys for good responses!

Nothing will happen until Summer anyway. By that time, I will have saved up for a down payment, or, mods for my current car.

I have a feeling GM is going to be offering these killer sales for a while. And think around August, we may see a model year end clearance. So thats when I would be shooting for.
I will be getting screwed on the existing car no matter what, but I figured out that when all is said and done, if I put 2000.00 down, at my current interest rate, I will be paying 50.00 more a month for an SS/SC over my base model. Which is certainly do-able. That is of course considering chevy's current incentive.

But I may not go that way either. It will largely dependant on what chevy does as far as sales go. But either way I want to go faster!
