Ideas on my exhaust, advice, street legal?

Well, tax money is here bills are paid and i have some left over. Only thing is i really want to run a full custom exhaust. I'm thinking of running 2.5 piping, and putting a new muffler on. I regret the muffler i have on it right now somewhat. But beyond that, the piping is custom from a Magnaflow service provider here locally, the muffler i want though is from Vibrant performance, and its BLACK. Some ads say that black mufflers are not street legal..??!?! i never heard of that, is that true? i'm just looking for more of show and sound rather than speed on the 2.2....

thanks!

You probably will loose some torque down low (2500rpm and under), but gain up high, (5000+)

I believe that the stock pipe is only 1.9" so 2.25" would be about 25% increase in size. 2.5 would be about a 60% increase. I think that this is too much for a 2.2L, but its up to you.

why would a black muffler be illegal?

now, if that particular muffler isn't street legal, thats one thing... but i don't see how the colour matters.

yeah the stock piping is small, would going with custom 2.25 be better increase for sound without sacrificing little or no performance?

One of the answers i got is b/c cops cant see it at night?!?! which i blew that answer off as bogus.... im gonna give it a shot, my balt is yellow and im on the yellow and black theme, and i think a black muffler on my custom exhuast would look slick and less flamboyant.

Go with the badass black muffler, I am yellow with a black theme and I endorse that whoever told you black mufflers are illegal needs some type of helmet.

Awesome, thanks i think 2.25 is good idea too from what i've heard so far. The cobalt has a resonator right behind the cat doesnt it? if so, should i just leave that out , or will that sound too raspy. I know some of that depends on the muffler, but would it be worthless to keep the resonator?

Great write up on that, i see what u mean by the sucking on a straw deal, basically you have to balance out the amount of intake and exhaust, as in..the more you suck in, the more room you need to blow out.... Cleared up a lot for me. Now that 2.5 is official ruled outta question, 2.25 shouldnt be too bad will it, gonna throw a CAI on if that makes a difference.

Welcome and Thanks.

2.25" sounds more suitable. Good luck.

there are some guys on here with the ss/sc and they are running a 3in, i think the bigger pipe works better on f/i rather than n/a motors...

Search in the 2.0 section, theres a great write up on which exhaust is best for you on the SS/SC. 3" is too big for little to no mods.

2.5" isn't too big but that's the largeset you'll want to go. 2.25" will give power gains without much loss in torque, but if you are willing to give up a lil torque for even more power go the 2.5" route. I thought all of the new cars were coming with 2.5" piping ( "-" the over axle section).

after reading adams write up on exhaust, 2.25 will b perfect for a 2.2l with minor bolt ons. only way i would do 2.5 is if the shop was doing crushbend. because a 2.5 crushbent would be around 2.3 realistically. As far as teh street legal part.... I found out where it came from, some states require that a muffler is VISIBLE! at night, the black is hard to be seen or not seen at all.. thats where it came from.
