View Full Version : Slicks
bdwarr6 12-16-2005, 09:11 AM I have spent the past hour and a half searching for slicks for an SS S/C
I need slicks with rims aswell.
Id prefer 16" or 17" I just need traction.
R33P3R007 12-16-2005, 09:17 AM I am not sure that you can just buy some slicks and bolt them on. I would go with Drag radials. Wouldn't want to break anything with so much traction. But I am not sure this is my first FWD car.
TxLonghorn#1 12-16-2005, 10:10 AM You should talk to NOMOREAVIL he's selling: "15 inch konig reasons
100 each (approx..little less). Maybe you can try thoughs :twothumbs
BLKSS 12-16-2005, 10:54 AM I would like to see someone running them first and see the results.

Problem is that 15" is too small on the SS/SC so as good as it sounds, the deal would backfire. There are rims off of tirerack that I got that are 17" and were $88 a piece.

they are not the right bolt pattern and are too small for the SS/SC
bdwarr6 12-16-2005, 11:36 AM I dont want rims unless I can put either a drag radial on them or a racing slick. I was looking for a rim and tire to get more traction. I am still unsuccessful in this search
R33P3R007 12-16-2005, 11:38 AM you can put either on rims? I don't get what your trying to say.
wasey13 12-16-2005, 11:58 AM Why won't 15s fit? Might have to grind a bit on your calipers, but I bet they will fit.

I wouldn't do that only because there is barely any clearance as is on a 16" rim so 15" you have to grind a bit off :nono: . Just doesn't seem smart to me...../shrug who knows.

I know, you can grind off a bit.
R33P3R007 12-19-2005, 03:30 PM but is the drivetrain going to handle the grip of a slick, or is the stock setup going to break shit.
Alex47 12-19-2005, 03:35 PM i would sugest a better cluch before you use slicks.
05_Blue_B10WN_SS 12-19-2005, 06:23 PM Slicks will help cushin the engine/ cut down on wheel hop a lot. Why buy another "Street Tire" when you already have your P-zeros. Dr's will still get wheel hop, and will cut your time down some. I know a lot of people, that have bought DR's, then the next season buy slicks and never go back. Its a waste of money.
Now onto the problem that arises here. You cant buy racing slicks for a 16" rim. The common size is a 15. So someone has to figure out how to fit a 15" rim on this car, or find a company that produces slicks for a 16" rim, that wont be outragous in price. Last time i bought slicks, they were pretty cheap. you can a grab a pair for about 200 bucks.
SilverSS/SC 12-31-2005, 09:17 PM Mickey Thompson makes a true 16" slick , and a true 17" slick . Problem is I doubt they would fit as they are sized for putting slicks on stock Camaro/Firebird wheels . The 16" slick would compare to running a 255/50-16 radial , 26" tire height with a ...if I remember right 9" tread width . The 17" slick would compare to a 275/40-17 radial , size wise . When I put my winter wheels on I held up one of my F-body 275/40 tires in the wheel well . The inner part of the tire was mashed against the inner wheel well and it was still sticking out about 1.5" from the fender lip .
I still have a set of the 16" ET streets from my Trans Am . What is the widest 16" steel rim available . The rim would have to be minimum 8" wide to run those tires .

1MEANSS 01-01-2006, 01:42 AM you CAN! use 15inch wheels all you need to do is buy 1/4 inch spacers for the front wheels and they will work fine....get the pontiac g6 15inch steelies and put spacers on the front and you are good to go!!!!

Are you sure of this? With 1/4" spacers, will it clear the brake calipers?
If you know anyone, or have done it yourself, can you post some pictures.
I am very interested in this.
Because if we can get 15"s on this car without any rubbing issues, it would be awsome.

Why is that dumb???
1MEANSS 01-01-2006, 08:33 PM yes i know it works i did it and so did one other guy on here too....i had the same prob with the srt-4 they have the exact same front brake size as us....we had to use a 1/4 inch spacer and it worked fine too ......but yes it does work 15s will be fine and not rub....

Well , cool then . It will be MUCH easier to find a suitable 15" slick for the track . I always had to run a 5/16" spacer on the front of my F-bodies to clear the brakes with skinny 15" wheels, nothing Im not already used to .
05_Blue_B10WN_SS 01-04-2006, 08:03 PM Um, anyone know of any sites that i can purchase spacers from?
Also, are the stud lengths going to be okay?
My dad has 1/4" spacers that he used to run on his 68 camaro. Will those work or not?
They are the typicaly chevy 5 lug, but im gonna guess the holes wont line up.
SilverSS/SC 01-04-2006, 08:10 PM If you have a pep boys , auto zone or kragen local , you should beable to buy them there . Those spacers typically have slots that are wide enuff to accomdate alot bolt circles . The ones from your dads car should work fine for strip duty .
68Drop 01-08-2006, 04:22 AM If a 15 inch rim will fit...then use that. You will be able to put a bigger tire on it, which will give you more traction. That, and the bigger the rim you use, the more expensive a slick will be. Also on a with the amount of tire on a 15 inch rim you can afford to drop the tire pressure to get it to really hook up
