Car running at 221 degrees
Yes, your coolant temp. can get that high, but your fan should be running. If it goes above 224 F, then you have a problem, just give it some gas & turn on the AC.

Turn on A/C to kick the cooling fans on. Make sure they are then comming on. If not get it fixed!
IF they are on then the thermostat in the engine may be stuck closed.
Mine has hit 216* before, but comes down again fairly quickly.

Need more details on your driving right before this happened. It could be normal, it could be abnormal but it depends entirely on the type of driving you were doing before you stopped at idle.
don't check the coolant, don't do anything. i'm surpirsed with this many responses, nobody has commented that this is totally normal. the cooling system in the cobalt depends on moving air. when there's no moving air, it doesn't cool as efficiently. it's totally 100% normal for the car to get hot if you leave it idling for a while, or in stop and go traffic. once you start moving, it should go back down. if it's ALWAYS at 221, then you may have to take a look. but if it's just once in a while when you're not moving, or moving slowly, then it's nothing to worry about.

Hence why I asked about driving conditions/habits just before these temps were seen. 221 CAN be totally normal or completely abnormal. It just depends. Not enough information in the first post to give a true answer.
and also, don't forget that the 2.2 runs hotter than the 2.0 on average. and some of the guys speaking up about their coolant temps, and what they see in their car, are running cooling mods. you're not comparing apples to apples.
not directed towards you, but there's a lot of bad info going around in this thread, and you guys are unnecesarily freaking the guy out. he's thinking there's something wrong with his car, when there's not. when i had my 2.2 i got freaked out the first time the temps got up that high, but it was not unusual at all especially when idling, like the op said he was. the 2.2 runs hotter than the 2.0 by a pretty decent amount.
like i said earlier, as long as it's not always that high, and goes back down when you start moving, absolutely 100% nothing to worry about. anything under 230 is considered "normal"
prime example. why should he check out the cooling system? do you know what normal temps are on the various models? just because you don't see those temps in your 2.0 doesn't mean it's not normal on a 2.2 at idle.

Plus, modern engines are made to run hot - very hot. the hotter the engine temp, the easier it is to meet emissions. A hotter engine allows for more complete combustion. Engine temps between 85 - 95 celcius is perfectly normal. Keep driving

I'm sick of people coming on here and bashing others. I am not some young punk that knows nothing about cars. I was probably working on cars before you were a gleam in you fathers eye.
