Bov?

couple questions as im doing my turbo build. what is the point behind a BOV? is it needed or is just for the kick ass fast and furious sound effect? is there any setup that you cannot use a BOV on or will any turbo setup be able to use one. and where o where do you install one?

i know there problem dumb questions but i would rather ask a dumb question than do something dumb. thank you in advance for any and all help!!

you need a BOV or a BPV. the stock tc setups on the 08+ cobalts come stock with a BPV not BOV. the BPV is on the side of the turbo and the BOV gets put on your charge pipes.

if you put a BOV you need a block off plate for your BPV on the turbo.

just some info that ik

yes you NEED one. it's to let all the extra pressure out when you shift so it doesn't make the turbo spin backwards...

the difference is a bpv recirculates the air back into the intake system and A blow off valve dumps the excess air into the atmosphere causing the hissing sound. blow off valves can cause a car to run rich for a moment when the pressure is being released because the car is expecting the excess air to be there but its being dumped out of the system entirely. you'd need one of the two for sure.

this is only true to some degree. any car where the maf sensor is before the bov like on the lnf you need to move it because of what is said above. the car will spike rich because it says where the hell did the metered air go? so it will add fuel to compensate. not every car is like that.

you can get a recirculated bov which to me is more reliable BUT more of a pain in the ass to route. its the same principle as a bpv but a recirculated bov such as the tial q tial alpha etc etc can handle a lot higher boost levels. the atmospherics bovs vent the air to the atmosphere giving your the pshhh sound. no real benefit to it other then noise.

Learn something everyday I'm just partial to bpv because i've always thought that blow off valves sound lousy.
