I always wondered what that metronome noise was...lol. I thought it was the serpentine belt making a noise at the same spot every rotation. Now I know!

 

GM has a TSB out for this concern, its a cover that goes over the direct injection pump to isolate the noise.

 

Really? What does it look like?

 

Hmmm, yeah could someone with some info post the TSB? Pics/info on the cover? As long as the ticking isn't a sign of some other problem, it doesn't bother me at all :shrug: That being said, I'd probably get it serviced by the dealer whenever I happen to take it in (maybe for the stage kit) if the TSB thing is true.

 

Hey guys I've just read over this thread but I wanna ask anyways.
I'm looking into buying a used 2008 TC and when I popped the hood with the engine running there was a constant pinging noise, almost like pennies inside the engine. Is this the direct injection noise that you're all talking about? When you're inside the car idling of driving you can't hear it at all thou.

 

Ehh....I'm assuing "Woodbridge" means "Woodbridge, ON"? If so can I recommend you have someone else go with you from our local Cobalt club and take a listen? PM me if you are in Ontario and I'll let you know...but my fuel pump and DI isn't so much a "ping" as it is a click...kinda like "tick...tick....tick..." I need to take a vid

 

Yea, I'm from Woodbridge Ontario. I might actually do that, or I might see if I can listen to another member's engine and compare it to the other TC.

 

I was listening to my engine tonight, and this new noise coming from it. I know of the common DI tick, but this sounds like someone is slapping a bambo stick on flesh. here is the youtube link

Maybe I'm speaking for myself, but every LNF motor I've ever heard makes that noise including mine.. I couldn't give you the technical term for what the "slapping" noise it, but I can assure you that it is normal..

 

That bambo stick on flesh sound is normal. You should hear the engine during a cold start. It sounds like it is going to blow up. I wish our 4-bangers sounded more like superbike engines....

Thank you guys! I just buyed my SS 2 days ago and was a friend was just like "Dude take the car to the dealer asap it sounds like a freeking deasel truck!" vids where very helpful I have a the rapid tic tic tic noise. Good to know its all normal

 

Diesel is a funny comparison... I've literally had someone ask me "since when has GM put diesels in cars?"

 

THANK YOU THAT TICKING WAS DRIVING ME NUTS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THE CAUSE...Does any undrstand why it is soo loud tho...what exactly is happening when the solenoid clicks

 

Thanks for all this information. I just recently purchased a 08 SS and I noticed this ticking sound too. It had me worried, but I went to this form and, like I always do, got great information about what I was noticing. Now I know that this is a normal sound! Thank you all again!

 

Yep, there's the ticking from the OHC valvetrain, the slower ticking from the direct injection system, and the "person in the trunk kicking" sound from the evaporative emissions system.

 

I believe it means, "DANGER TO MANIFOLD!!"

 

What noise is that??
Often times... when the car is stationary... I can hear is knocking noise coming from either under or rear of the car... happens every 20-25 secs for a little while...

is that the evaporative emissions system?

 

Does it sound like a person in the trunk kicking the car?

 

Yeah that's a normal noise too. It will scare you sometimes even though you know it is normal. You can usually only hear that one at a complete stop, but it's loud if you don't have the stereo on which would mask the kicking or knocking sound coming from behind you.

 

hmm.. sounds more like from under... definitely not from the front...

 

Yup thats the canister purge solenoid on the canister clunking. It happens about 10 or 15 minutes after you take off and you usually hear it 3 or 4 times. The ECM runs a diagnostic on the fuel tank to insure it has no air leaks so it fills and vents the tank. It does it everytime you start the car and run it for the specified time. Yes it sounds like someone is kicking the spare tire well in the trunk from underneath.

I just tell everyone I got one of the Poteet brothers (Bad Boyz 2) in the trunk.
