Are you concerned with long term reliability of the 2.4?

And have you had any problems with the motor itself thus far?

GM has not had a good history with high output premium fuel motors in small cars. (Quad 4 in Chevrolet Beretta's come to mind...)

well the Qaud 4 was a long time ago. The Ecotec was designed from input from GMs world wdie operations.

I have zero concerns about engine longevity

I craked my block, warped the head, and melted the number four piston on my first 2.4 with only 381 miles on it. The coolant hose was loose and as soon as I saw coolant coming from the exhaust, I wanted to let it go good so they wouldn't just pop another hose on and send me on my way

48 000KM and zero engine problems. Actually, it seems to keep getting faster the more it gets broken in.

I feel the same thing. Mine has just under 9k miles on it and its running like a champ. The wifes car, we have had to take it in 3 times all for wrapped rotors. Thankfully the stealership has fixed them under warranty.

yep.....I had to be towed a 1/4 mile to the dealership.......She hung in there for quite awhile. My DIC wasn't displaying coolant temp and the motor wouldn't rev past 4k, I just drove it until basically it just stopped and smoke started pouring out from under the hood. I could see the dealership from where I was.....lol

Their on-site rental car place was closed at the time so they gave me a demo car off the lot

I guess I'm the only one not happy then. At about 1600kms, my 2.4 started making cold start noise that's identical to piston slap heard commonly on the GM V6 3100/3400 engines.

I took care in breaking this engine in and I've used nothing but premium fuel. So, I am just a little ticked. The Grand Am I traded in on this car had the piston slap as well and was the main reason I traded it.

It goes to the dealer Tuesday. If they don't do something about it, it's my last GM car ever.

I still don't get it. A little engine noise and its no good? I have never heard a 4 cly that sounds good at idle.

I have heard of piston slap on LS1s but nothing else.

A rocker arm let loose in my first engine and all hell broke loose from there. The second engine is great though. It runs like a champ!

The "piston slap" he speaks of is probably just a lifter......

Yes they do. I have a White SS 2.4. They don't make a White SS/SC, which is a damn shame.

never saw anything that looks like a rocker arm to me in the exploded view of the 2.4. i'm asking a serious question, the only DOHC heads i ever had apart were on toyota 4A-GEs and 4A-FEs
