couple 2.4L five speed questions
couple 2.4L five speed questions
First one is clutch engagement. I did a quick search and it seems about right. Every car Ive ever driven should have the clutch engagement about3/4 of an inch off the floor but this cobalt seems like it starts to grab at like 3-4 inches anybody else any different?
Second is Ive been messing around with rpm and cruising speeds/rpms. What do you think the most optimum rpm for cruising is? I noticed a mpg increase when I drive at 70-80 mph vs 55-65 mph. Im usually cruising at around 2500 rpm which is where I shift. what do you guys shift at as well. NOT RACING.

Yeah you don't have to push very far to engage the clutch.
The mpg issue i can't comment since i have a tune and that will make or optimal mpg rpm different, but i usually shift aournd 3k and keep it between 2-3k during normal driving. I get above 3k i up shift, i get below 2k i downshift.

[QUOTE=Dman]MPG is optimal between 50-60 mph crusing at the lowest rpm possible. and during regular driving you need to shift and the lowest possible rpm but not so low to make it bogg[/QUOTE
Im going to disagree on a couple things here. Most of the speed limits were set years ago where 55 mph was optimum. this was the world of 2 and three speed trannies. With today and the EFI systems The doesnt hold true anymore.
The proof:
My 66 mustang has a 3 speed trans Around town I get 17-19 mpg no matter how I drove. When I hit the highway it goes down to about 15-17. Just a couple but noticeable. I used to log my fuel consumption on this car pretty good and it was always consistant. This was with a 1/1 third gear ratio. And a 3.20/1 rear gear. The faster I would go the faster fuel consumption was, which forced me to drive at 55.
My 88 turbo coupe is a five speed but the final ratio in the trans is .79/1 and the rear gear is a 3.73/1. as long as i stayed out of boost I always did better on the highway as long as I kept it below ~72mph. The EEC would go into a default since it doesnt use a MAF it uses a VAM once it hits a certain air draw it would just dump the same amount of fuel.
The Cobalt does better then the two I get ~31 mpg cruising at 60 Once I hit 70-75 it goes up to around 33 mpg
Ive Been shifting at around 3 grand while taking it easy I cruise at 2400-2500 rpm and notice no drop in mpg.
the cobalt clutch is surly wierd. Is it cable? or Hydro?

Not to mention the fact that as your speed increases----so does the drag on the car. Harder to push thorugh the air.
lol i love tyhis clutch ...barely have to push on it to engage...i shift at about 3000-3500 in first and 2500-3000 in all the rest....cruise at 2000 and used to see 33 mpg before these hondas showed up....lmao...
Yeah on my way to Florida my average MPG was 34.1 5th gear 70-80mph. And yeah I also gun it at the light and reach 60 as fast as I can then let off to cruise at 45-50 and everyone DOES give me the "WTF" look.
