Just wanted to make everyone aware of something. DO NOT GET DEGREASER ON POWDER COATING. I was cleaning my car today and decided to clean the engine bay a little. I wasn't trying to get degreaser on the powder coated parts, however some over spray made its way onto it. It got onto my DC Sport Strut Bar as well as my valve cover and made a nice black speckle effect. Luckily its not too noticeable, it just got on one side of the valve cover towards the back and a little on one side of the bar. Just thought Id give everyone a heads up. If you want pics let me know and Ill try and put some up

 

Thanks for the info. My wheels are powder coated and I could have used degreaser to get the brake dust off.

 

What product are you using? I use Simple Green and have no problems at all. Powder coat should be impervious to such stuff.

 

Purple Power from autozone it is now under the name of purple passion is the same stuff

 

That must be some wicked stuff you're using, we do a weekly test on our powder coat at work and they use MEK and that just fogs up the finish a bit but if it did that to it, I'd think twice about using it

Thats wierd! Powder coating is ment to resist that type stuff. Who did the coatings? I'd check to see what they say.

 

The strut bar came coated from the factory and the valve cover i have talked to the guy about it and he is going to look into what couldve caused it and see about getting it redone for me

Well my powder coater said that he could do both the bar and the cover for $100 which isnt bad considering i paid like $75 before just for the cover. However i may try to take some of the degreaser that caused the problem and put it on a rag and wipe it over the car and the one part of the cover to try and get it a consistent darker look. Then if it ***** it up or i just dont like how it turns out give it to him to fix

 

i'd do that. if you get it to match it'll still look good.

 

I actually used some more of the degreaser and turned one of the area of the powder coat and the bar a darker color. It looks kinda cool. Im the only one I know of that has a 2 tone valve cover now lol. Ill have to try and get some pics of it. Probably wont be til Tuesday.

i think you might have a questionable powder coater, if he had a hard time covering up the bits i sanded pretty lightly (which i still thing he should have finished anyways), and its getting messed up from that...id be questioning the quality he did

 

well the color change is deff from the degreaser when the engine is slightly warm. It did not do it when the engine was cold. Also it changed the strut bar which was coated by the factory. It was industrial strength stuff so im not surprised that something like this happened considering its probably close to acid lol. As for the areas that you sanded he was able to cover them just fine. You cant notice the areas unless you look real hard and close and know where it was at.
