I just got my new SS and I have a few questions that I'm not sure of.
One, is our computer OBDII or OBDIII?
Two, has any one releized how much restriction they put on this motor through the intake piping and runners and the exhaust (esspecially the muffler).
And three, is this 2.4L exactly the same as the 2.2L, just more displacement? Meaning that any thing made for the 2.2 will fit ours, such as turbo manifolds?

1. The diagnostic system used on ALL Cobalts is a prelude to OBD3. The PCM is on OBD2 but every other body system is on GM-LAN which is GMs plan for handling OBD3. Parts house scanners might not work for this reason.

2. Yes. Intake and exhaust restrictions are high for a 'performance' car. This is for a 'regular' customer's satisfaction. They don't want to hear much of the engine other than the sounds the car's passengers make,

3. AFAIK the 2.2 and 2.4 are of the exact same block construction and share the same cams, although the 2.4 has VVT. As far as exterior block construction, the 2.2, 2.4 and 2.0 should have the same head. I haven't reasearched this at all but I work for GM and know how they operate as far as production norms are concerned.

 

2. I would say the restriction isn't overly much for a production "everybody" car. It is pretty loud when you get on it compared to most other 'regular' cars.

 

so if it is a prelude to the OBDIII should we be worried about the motor detunning itself if we put an after market intake or someting of the sort on like in other pre OBDIII cars do?

2.4L has higher 10.4 to1 cr
oil piston squirters
engine oil cooler
More powerful computer
forges rods (shorter too)

The block is different. The bulkheads have more material for more strength.
Water jacket is deeper in the block for better cooling.

I have a hard time beleiveing it has the same cams as the 2.2L---the 2.4L peak hp is 800rpm higher

 

Wow, I've read that document at least 5 times before, and I don't know how I missed the forged rods part before.
