Question 6 Speed ? yay or nay??

just thinkin about havin the quaiffe 6 speed put in my car to go along with the build thats about to happen, i have questions because i simply cannot find the facts.. will it handle 500-600whp ??? what are the shift points in mph? that may seem like an odd question but i just thought i would throw that one in there because i DO NOT like the gearing in the stock 5 speed. 1st gear is depressing and after that its just flat out gay. hate it. so if anybody can help me with the real facts about the quaiffe 6 speed and maybe throw in some opinions, that would be great, i love getting opinions and more knowledge. also, my car will not see the drag strip very often... it will still be my "nice day out driver" and occasionally a highway demon so keep the opinions based off of that... thanks ahead of time everybody.

the quaiffe just adds a gear between 1st and second. The final drive is no different.

hm.. cool, so as far as how its made, since it is a QUAIFFE,, is it made any better, more reliable, able to handle a bit more torque?

the gears in the f35 are not weak, it is the casing.

thats what i hear, see i was TOLD by some other people on here that the 6 speed should be able to handle the power that comes from the build & bigger turbo and blah blah blah... thats what im tryna find out, is that an accurate statement.. i could just call quaiffe myself, but i dont have enough minutes on my lil cheapass afghan cel-phone to do so..

First gear needs to be longer, not shorter. I would think that a 6-speed would be super-irritating.

well, IMO, with my power (in sig) 1st gear is just way too sporadic.. for one i have a stage 4 clutch so i cant just slide out the pedal and lay into it little by little until its go time,, and 2,, its like it bogs for a lil bit, then outta nowhere,,, wwwwwhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaapp!!!! jus hits full power outta nowhere and becomes useless by tricking you into 2nd gear... so again,, IMO,, this 6 speed may turn out to be what gets ran in my car..

Sounds like a Honda. :/
The K20 is a Integra Type-R engine. It is also the main engine in the non US Ariel Atom.

only the jdm integra type R. not the one that was sold in the states, that was a b18c5 i believe. the k20 is only found in a couple usdm cars, the 06+ civic si, and acura rsx type s. theres also older weaker k20's in the civic si ep3, and base model rsx.

i have to agree about the 6 speed tranny on the honda. it was the best transmission that i ever had. when it worked right. lol.

don't you lose acceleration w/ a 6 speed due to having to shift an extra time? it is one reason we do so well against 6 speeds because we can hold each gear longer and use that to hold max power longer. I would just stick with the 5. the money you spend on the 6 couldn't you just change the ratio in the tranny. Just have to change the ratio of first. Shouldn't be that bad.

6speeds would be pointless in the cobalt IMO. We need a longer first gear if anything else. Only thing a 6speed would be good for is reduced highway RPMs...

since our cars lose all their ***** in 5th anyway why not lower 5th and raise 1st like i said before. I don't know what the cost of that would be but if you have a knowlege of trannys or know a shop all that would be involved is changing 1st and 5th to a suitable ratio and replace the syncros. It shouldn't be that hard since the engine is being built anyway.

yes and no. The case is the weakest point, but the quaife gears are still stronger than OEM gears. According to Quaife IIRC, they were about 30% stronger than the stock gears.

OP, if you do the 6sp swap, cryo your case as well. Thats a lot of power for a FWD 4cyl car though...sure you're gonna hit youre goal? There's better ways to invest your money if you stay under those numbers IMO

think if a ss had 6 gears. i get 39-42 mpg on the freeway right now so lower rpm and you would be looking at 50+ lmao

the 5th gear is there to conserrve gas while cruising down the highway. No one is suppose to be "racing" all the way to 5th gear, thats just stupid. i agree that 1st gear feels kinda short but switching to a 6speed will net nothing but an extra gear to shift too. THe first gear will feel the same as it does now, and the final drive will also feel the same. It WILL still be sporadic in 1st gear.

i know that. I'm talking about if the tranny is rebuilt with a taller 5th then better mileage can be achieved. If you also make first taller you make 1st usable. Just change out 1st and 5th to taller ratios put in new syncros to match and you have a 5 speed that performs well and gets improved gas mileage for whatever the cost of such a conversion is.

I see, You will still be at the same rpm in 5th gear, but it will accelerate faster.

With all the torque that that's available with the LNF engine in the lower rpm ranges I think adjusting driving style would be a lot more cost effective than just throwing money at it. Especially if the car will be primarily a street car. I can think of some other ways to use up that $5000, plus, that the Quaife would cost. How about some custom 17" wheels and REAL sticky tires? JMHO!

How are you getting 39 MPG with your LNF? Hypermiling? Smart people want to know. And fuel mileage is not JUST a function of gear ratios. With a taller gear you would need more throttle to maintain a given speed which would probably wipe out any advantage you might gain from the ratio change. It's a crap shoot with every change having an effect, good or bad, on everything else. But I still want to know how you're getting 39 MPG!
