cobalt ss/tc k04 turbo question

Just curious, anyone know just how reliable the turbo is in our cobalt ss/tc's? What is the average lifespan? Will they last the life of the car? Just kinda wondering since i dont really hear to much about how reliable the turbo's are.

Off topic...you're in my area...have you driven down West Rd. near berea recently? There's been a handful of blown turbos...but I wouldn't worry too much about them going bad...I mean there's guys running these things way out of their efficiency range and overspinning the crap out of them and I haven't seen too many horror stories.

If you change the oil regularly and dont shut the car down after spirited driving the turbo should last a long time.

VW/Audi has been using variants of the K03/K04 for years with out issues. I would say its a reliable turbo, using water/oil to cool extends the life, and shutting down after some spirited driving is not such a big issue anymore because of design, timers are not needed/required.

The only issue I have is in GM's choice of 5W30 for "fuel efficiency". Thats a personal preference, but 5W30 (especially Mobil 1) shears fast in a turbo cars, after 1-2k miles there have been cases of the 30weight oil now being 20weight.

Their choice to use 5W-30 also reflects the need for a lighter oil due to very tight tolerances. Fuel economy is also helped.

That road to ha ha I drive up and down Bagley every day going from Olmsted Falls to Parma to the GFs house. I was talking about West Rd. that comes off of Lindbergh though..I saw a silver TC the other day with some dirty wheels in my development that I've never seen before that's all. Cool to hear there's another TC in the area...we've got quite a few around here.

I'm not sure if we would void the warranty or hurt the engine using Mobil 1 5W-40 or 0W-40, but that should offer decent protection.
