Couple questions

So I just bought my '10 SS and I'm definitely going to need winter tires being in freaking New England, what tire does anyone recommend thats not super expensive, and I also need some sort of wheel (steely's I think?) but not sure where to go about getting them, do I ask the dealership?

Also might be a dumb question, but the GMPP exhaust on the '10 SS is a catback, correct? I know it sounds like one, but I haven't had a performance car before, so theres still a lot I need to learn about mine.

Which would you recommend, a CAI or SRI intake? I'm looking to get hopefully get rid of the stock intake, and put in a cooler one. Does GMPP make any kind of intake? I haven't seen one on their website, but then again not everything on websites is part of what they sell. Again, I'm new to the whole performance car thing, so there's quite a bit I don't know any help is appreciated, thanks!

Steve

short ram totally, and exhaust? haha who needs one just open down pipe! why? because race car thats why!

edit: Tirerack.com has some good prices on wheels, If I were you I'd do wheels, intake, exhaust, and some lowering springs. those are pretty much the best things to start with when modding.

Well I don't have the money to do the exhaust, and probably won't for quite some time lol so I'm just looking to do the intake. Why SRI not CAI, just wondering? I've heard arguments for both, but I'm not quite sure which one I'd want on my car. I definitely won't put the intake down by the wheel well since it rains a hell of a lot here, and it snows

oops double post

Just a second set of rims.
Can use those ones as winter and others as summer.

Not ideal, but yea.

I like SRI personally because you have pretty much a Zero chance of Hydro locking which is nice, I had to clean a Honda H22 motor after a friend hydro locked it and we cut his cold air intake into a short ram so that it didn't happen again. I think that the SRI also is just as good as a CAI plus you have a turbo car with a inter cooler, the inter cooler will cool the intake charge air so why get a cold air intake, a Short ram also might improve response a tad because you do not have as long or a piping to pull air through.

As for Steelies look around on here I think someone was selling HHR steelies with winter tires already on them

I'd be shocked.

I've never been able to find any that are big enough to fit over our brakes.

Steve
GMPP made a catback for the 05-07 SS supercharged / SS/NA /LT/ and LS.... it was a 600 dollar extra that could be purchased from and installed by a dealer ..... the 08 and up SS Turbo hasn't had a GMPP exhaust offered for it .....so your "stuck" going aftermarket if you want something bigger .

The Stock exhaust on the SS/TC seems big enough to handle anything the stock turbo can throw at it (once you get rid of the cats) so for most people it's a sound mod more than a power adder. IMHO going with a cattless downpipe and keeping the stock catback seems to be a decent setup.

^^ Above post summed it up.

As for the intake- get a K&N Short Ram and you'll never look back.

Why's that?

I wasn't really looking into going that much into modding the car. My plan is to drive this car for a few years then garage it and keep it as a "summer drive" kinda car.

SRI has been recommended to me by several people, so thats what I'm probably gonna go with. I wonder if any dealerships in Massachusetts will install it and not be douches about it. Any Masshole know one? lol

They can mess with your a/f ratio. Tune is similar in price to the intake and will also make an actual performance difference.

The GM tune, or some shop tune? I'd rather get a GM tune than some shop since I don't want to void my warranty being a college student lol

Now to look for a filter, I had K&N in mind, any words against them?

Even a K&N filter will skew the fuel trims on these cars .... I used to see -7 Long term FT's with just the filter.....and you want that number to be as close to 0 as possible. If your not going to tune the car your better off leaving the intake side alone ..... the GM tune won't help anything concerning the intake /aftermarket filter.

Mount the winter tires on stock rims and get some MSRs for next spring with the tires you already have.

I got my winter tires from tire rack dot com
850 shipped to APO already mounted on some cheap 16" Msw's
the rims were 69$ a wheel, and the steels were 59.. Made more since to spend the extra 40 bucks and have something somewhat decent looking

I ran the K&N intake without a tune for over 2 years. No problems. My LTFTs stay around -2.0 to -3.4%

The BYT tune I also have keeps the LTFTs between +1.5 and -2.0%.

You can run a K&N intake without a tune and not get funky fuel trim issues, its all based on how the filter is positioned.

Oh and I also ran the K&N drop in before switching to the intake. I have a -4.0% fuel trim. Honestly its not far off from the factory fuel trim swings.

If you decide to get an intake, look into getting an Aeroforce interceptor guage. Plugs right into the OBDII port and gives you over 30 different parameters to monitor include AFR and fuel trims. Definately the best purchase to get if your new to the car and you wanna keep it safe.

dont worry about the tune right now... i ran perfectly fine without a tune for roughly a year. the car will adjust enough to run it perfectly fine. I never threw a CEL. just go intake CAI or ram i havent had ONE problem with my intake and i live where it pours rain and alot of still water on the road.

i recommend a catless DP (that will most likely throw a CEL) intake, charge pipe and catback.

with only that and the stage 1 kit i was pushing the numbers in my sig. of course now im tuned and am pushing a bit more than that now but i ran without a tune for quite some time without problems

you could find a cheap set of borbets on tire rack or elbrus 105's in 17" with some snow tires.

i was very lucky to find a guy selling his black 08 ss/tc on ebay and he was willing to sell me his spare set of winter rims/tires for only $400 plus shipping. and 85-90% tread left on the good year ultra grips.

the elbrus are tight but i got spacers coming in a few days. (.007") might paint them black or gold..
