When you change the exhaust size/flow, it's bound to change sound. Mine went from a wind up toy with factory exhaust to a nice throaty growl when I bumped up to 3" all the way back. It's completely normal.

Add to that the fact that you've gone from a catted dp to one without it AND taken out the muffler, I'm not at all surprised ur car's tone has changed.

i beleave he means after time the tone chaged... this could be due to the fact of the parts wearing in or the car adjusting to the new airflow.

I haven't found a way to make my SS/TC sound like a GSX-1000 or a Yamaha R1. I heard one of those going WOT under a bridge and it sounded like a Formula 1 car. That is what I'd like to hear. The WRX/STI has a lawn mower sound - it's not bad but it's not what I am looking for either.

There's this silver Cobalt coupe with a modified exhaust that I see almost every morning, heading west on I-94 and onto I-696 West. It is very loud but the exhaust note is like a deep gruffy lawn mower.

I want it loud, but like a Formula 1 race car. If they can make the 998 cc engine in a motorcycle that loud, why is it so hard to do it in a 2.0L DOHC I4?

it's the high revs, only way you'd get that sound is to get a different motor. one that can rev up to 10k-12k.

the only way your going to get it to sound like an f1 car is to put that motor in there.......then motors rev up to like 12-14k with ease.

The only aftermarket exhausts available make the Cobalt sound like a lawnmower, Subaru, or a combination of both.

Mine does it too. I was thinking it is something to do with the Variable Valve Timing. If there is any variation in how the exhaust valve is closing ....your going to hear a different exhaust tone. I'm totally guessing so don't take it like I'm trying to be a know it all.

Are you serious?

Your car isn't gonna sound like a bike, ever, and moreso the new R1 because of the odd firing order/crossplane crank.

This thread makes me

Do you have any idea how long Honda guys, for example, have been trying to get their cars to sound like anything BUT a Honda? Our cars, with aftermarket exhausts of any type, sound sort of like a weird wrx weed wacker thing...that's just life...different mufflers will only muffle the sound (as they are supposed to) and try to hush it down slightly.

Unless you put a different engine in your car...you can bet that your engine is going to do it's damnedest to try to sound like itself.

Every owner of a 4-banger tuner car wishes they sounded like either an EVO, WRX, or an SRT4...be glad ours kind of sounds like a WRX at least a little...and not like a Honda.

I would like a car that sounds like a sport bike, complete with the backfire snaps upon deceleration. The weed whacker, lawn mower, fart can, WRX, muscle car, and dump truck sounds have been done ad nauseam.

Well if you really want that out of a car...your options are a T-REX or a SmartForTwo with a Hayabusa swap...

My wife's Honda Civic Si reminds me a little of a sportbike: no power down low, but if you flog it really hard it will start to skoot.

I've seen the videos of the Smartuki, but can they make them that way from the factory with a factory warranty? I think I also mentioned before that the Lotus Elise sounds bad a$$ on the track but it uses a Toyota engine.

You need to stop talking before you hurt your little brain.
