Uh, you have no idea what you're talking about if you think running .88 is unreliable. It isn't just the AFR that nukes the ringlands. I drop mine off a little up top for other reasons, but nowhere near .83.

I spend 30 minutes at a time with the calculated oil temp over 240F. Gobs of NLS, and constant WOT. Not a problem with my engine.

Overly aggressive turbo spooling, especially up top where it's blowing hot air, and overly aggressive timing are far more likely factors which contribute to knock and the leading demise of the ringlands.
