Friend "Blew Up" His Stage 1 t/c..??
Hey guys,
So, last year, my friend upgraded from his old LS sedan to a 10 t/c. It's all stock aside from GM stage 1 and some kind of exhaust..
It never really gave him any problems aside from the normal Cobalt ones.. Until the other night. He was merging onto the highway by us, picked up speed, and shifted. But he missed the shift. Not sure if he mis-shifted or what, but the "missed the shift". Then suddenly, the car basically started making what sounded like "metal clanking around in his motor" noises, and wouldn't move.
Again, I wasn't there, and I'm just going off of what he was telling me over the phone. I don't know if it's some type of actual engine problem, or something blowing in the tranny, etc. He got it towed to the dealer, and they're gonna have a look at it. But that means charge you out the ass, and void your warranty. This car is obviously still basically brand new, and he's paying almost 500 a month on it. So this is killing him. Any idea as to what this could be from the description? I know it's rough, but any ideas? The stage kit was dealer installed, so they can't blow that off on him. But I just hope the thing isn't shot. It was damn fun to drive. But if so, I guess we have a really nice t/c to part out. lol
Thanks!

I would say all modern cars have, protection against over-revving the motor on an upshift, thats why we have rev limiters, the problem with them is however, that it only protects on an upshift and not a downshift.
Im not a car expert but i cant see why it would be tranny related, i would guess more along the lines of the gasket, springs, valves and so on.

No way a crate is worth half of the car, especially being a 2010.... You can pick up crates for under $5000 I believe. Anyways, if he's all stock except a dealer installed GMS1, he should be covered under warranty 100%

Lol not when you miss a shift and grenade the motor. Sure you can lie and say it happened another way but if you tell them otherwise they wont cover you. Im sure they have a way to check to see what happened before the car blew up too. If not then it will be easier to lie.

I think maybe it screwed the synchros up a little bit because I am able to pull it out of gear pretty easily without pressing in the clutch but it still runs fine. It now has 30k on the dash so...... Fluke deal IMHO ....

I did it one time. Pinged the rev limiter shifting from 4th to 2nd , I just got the car and it only had 2500 miles on it ... I thought I really messed it up but after it banged the rev limiter like that it popped into neutral right away like it is supposed to. Never had any problems yet..

As far as I know the after market exhaust will only void the exhaust warranty. They might try to say that but just a catback should have no effect on blowing a motor or trans like that. I think he will run more into a problem when they scan the ECM and see what he was doing before it blew. They might not warranty it because of "operator error" but the built in safeties of the engine and trans should have saved it like PrincessTurbo stated above.

Happened to me it sounds like tranny. If the car idles and makes this sound then engine damage occured or the car is ingear with the tranny being blown. I say he went from second to third lol. By by third.... warranty should cover it if ure friend is smart. Gm will try to fuc* him over so tell him to fight anything and everything gm says that is. Negative to him and his car.

I agree with floating and bending the valves. The "black box" will show that he missed a shift and over-revved. He will have to pay to get it fixed, which is what should happen. It was, by his own admission, his fault, after all.
