Canada GMS1 Top Speed

I finally took my car out after the first oil change yesterday and couldnt resist temptation. Before the GMS1 I had it to 135mph a few times but then winter hit.... So I was in the right place with no traffic and wide open roads and decided to see what it would do I backed out of it at 258kmh=160mph but it was still pulling pretty good Im guessing it would have made 165 maybe 170mph?? kinda scary on blizzak tires at 160 though lol car was getting pretty light and pretty unstable!! Anyone seen more than 160,165 anyone made it to 170 yet??

Yea that would be a neat trick but I dont think I wanna be messing around trying to reset or even look at anything on the dic at those speeds!! oh and I should add my car has the dreaded high rise spoiler too if it really slows the car down I cant imagine how fast a spoiler delete GMS1 car would be!!

155mph - high spoiler
160mph - low spoiler

that's based on 260/260

of course if you have more power you can go faster

Drag limited means at 160mph the car's engine cannot make anymore power because the drag on the car is to much..

I know what you mean when I was younger I had a nice 83 Z28 with a cam and some bolt ons and I used to drive that thing at 130-150 mph everywhere I went never once thought it was too fast or scary, its been a while since Ive been anywhere near 150 but I had to see what this little cobalt would really do Im absolutely amazed at the performance this thing has yet still gets 35-40 mpg and costs nothing to insure best bang for the buck and honestly the best car Ive owned so far....

It does its job thats for sure.
Yah I let her go once, conditionds permitted it.
But to do it on a back road or something is scary stuff.....
I was younger once and had a camaro too.....not anymore thou.
I would like to see some top speed numbers on tuned cars.

You are a braver man then me lol. That was over the speed rating of the blizzak tires, I would be too scared one would blow out.

I have gms1 and haven't even tried to tap it out.. Don't think I wanna go that fast in a Balt. That being said I seriously doubt it was still pulling hard at 160mph since the tune doesn't make that much more power at higher Rpms and most people have barely been able to break 150. U must have been going downhill with a tailwind.

It was kinda crazy with blizzaks on but it was perfect no wind, no hills no traffic and yes it was still pulling pretty good at 160, I will post a video as soon as I get the summer tires remounted and prove it, I have no reason to lie about anything and I have owned lots of cars that had 150mph+ top speeds I dont plan on driving the cobalt like this all the time I just wanted to test it out and finally see what it was capable of and 160mph was very easy to get to on level roads with no wind and no traffic!

Hey man it's your life. At least ya have the open roads for it in alberta but ya do yourself a favour and get some performance tires put on before they shread themselves at that speed and you end up eating through a straw the rest of your life.. Doing that speed with winter tires on is pretty idiotic.

I dont think its a limiter issue, and if it was GMS1 would erase that I would think.
I was pretty sure it was a drag limit issue.

Aftermarket tune can easily raise the rev limiter to 7K and a car with a spoiler delete should be able to hit 170 in theory with a long enough straight away.

Some winter tires can actually handle high speeds. My Falken Eurowinters have a V speed rating which means they can safely hit 150MPH.

not sure if you're being facetious or not but just in case you're not, it's when the drag force (air pressure exerted on the vehicle) becomes equal to the force the engine can produce. At that point the vehicle can no longer accelerate. Hense it's speed being drag limited

Edit: ****! I just saw the emoticon in the upper left corner of your post.. lol.. oh well my bad

Speed Limiter and Spoiler size issues aside, online calculators suggest this:

If the 260hp SS/T ran 156mph, a 290hp Stage 1 will run 162mph

And for the Supercharged model ...

If the 205hp SS/SC ran 142mph, a 245hp Stage 2 will run 150mph

Top Speed Calculator
http://www.rx7.org/Robinette/top_speed.htm

I know the calculator isn't perfect, but I'm betting those numbers are pretty darn close.

The only true way to tell a vehicle's Top Speed is to do an opposite 2-way run on a flat road (to cancel out wind effects).

Except he was doing 160.. I doubt his tires were rated that high and why would anyone want snow tires rated for 150mph? Who would drive that fast in the winter?

there's no truth to alot of top speed claims .. Wikipedia claims the ss/sc has a higher top end than the tc also they say it's 158mph.. which is horseshit since there's no way it makes more speed with less power so it may be a typo...the only way to know is to see it yourself. And as I mentioned before the gms1 powerband drops after 5400rpm so realistically the top end would not increase much since it's higher rpm power shouldn't increase much.

SS Naturally-aspirated SS Supercharged SS Turbocharged
0-60 mph
0-96.5 km/h 7.1 seconds 5.9 seconds 5.5 seconds
¼ mile 15.6 @ 90 mph (140 km/h) 14.4 @ 100 mph (160 km/h) 13.9 @ 103 mph (166 km/h)
Top speed† 129 mph (208 km/h) 158 mph (254 km/h) 155 mph (249 km/h)

I can see that apprently Ive opened a can of worms with this one..... I am a very competent driver have been to 175mph in a few vettes, I didnt do any of this high speed stuff near anything or anyone that would result in any death or horrible accidents I was in the middle of nowhere flat roads no fences no ditches just open fields on either side of the highway, I am not saying "my car must do 170 mph cause it was still pulling at 160" Im simply asking if anyone else has had their cars to top speed and what the results were, Im very surprised to be honest that it pulled to 160 so easily it wasnt like a 2 minute windout barely climbing in 5th gear it was nls from 3rd to 5th then right up to 160 then i let off cause car was gettiing light, Blizzak tires while def not summer performance tires are more than capable of handling 160 mph for 30-40 seconds at a time without any chance of sidewall or tread damage the issue that slowed me down was the full tread and the slipping that the tread causes on a side note the tires hold great in straight line acceleration but after about .70g's they start to slip due to the deep tread and soft compound but chew through the snow damn near as good as my old Jeep TJ, well as long as the front spoiler isnt diggin in anyways!!

well at least ya have the roads to do it on... but ya drag limitations become a big problem... drag gets exponentialy stronger after a certain speed. i doubt the GMS1 tune would give the car enough extra power to make it much more faster than stock. but if ya say you've done it then cool i'll take your word for it instead of trying it myself :P and yes it would be interesting to see what this car could be capable of with aftermarket tunes at the salt flats or something.
