The "How I officially f*****d my clutch" thread!

So for quite a while now I have known that my clutch was basically on it's way out. It flat out won't hold 4th or 5th anywhere below 5k unless I'm pedaling the gas and I've even been noticing some slip start to happen even in 3rd now.... so needless to say I've just been counting the minutes down before the clutch is officially screwed and I've sort of been trying to push it off for as long as possible.... until now that is.

So this Saturday was my buddy's bachelor party and after we get back to his place from a beer and rum filled night out in NYC (we all took a limo down and back so we were at least KIND OF responsable drinkers.... ), we were all hanging out in his driveway being slightly obnoxious and we decided in our enhanced briliant state of mind that it's time for a few of us do some burnouts.... at about 3am. lol

Well long and short of it. I pull up to do my burnout. I lock my ebrake, turn off esc, rev her up and drop the clutch. The resulting "burnout" wasn't quite what I was hoping for, but it basically looked a little something like this vid below.... just not quite as extreme as I wasn't nearly as much of an idiot as this guy is for going so long, but the result was the same. Fast forward to 40 seconds.

Corvette Burnout Fail Destroys Clutch - YouTube

Needless to say, I was pretty damn embarrassed and slightly annoyed. Complete and utter burnout fail on my part! So luckily the new clutch, flywheel, and everything else is already shipped and on its way. Hopefully I have her back on the road by the end of the week.

Feel free to post up your own horror story, or just plain ol' clutch failures in here if you so desire! Misery sure does love company after all....

Yeah that's literally where I was mentally for at least the past 6 months to a year, but it slowly got worse and worse of course until this ish happened. I actually had to pull funds that were supposed to be going toward another engine build that I've been trying to get done for quite some time, but I sort of need the balt on the road for obvious reasons.... so I know how you feel man

I'm actually getting the ky stage 3 as well, so hopefully she's as solid of a clutch as everyone has claimed.

Im getting to the point of slippage in 3rd now. If I get on it after 3500 and ease into it, it will hold thou so I still have some time to buy

every time i see this video, i picture the guy from the fast and the furious running up and popping the hood asking "WAS THAT FUNNN!!!?" hahaha. I cant believe that guy in the video!!
and not to mention the idiot with the camera, who in their right mind would walk in front of a corvette (or any car) trying to burnout. WHat would happen if that thing caught traction and took off. That ******* would be toast.
But at any rate, sorry to hear OP. Sometimes the simplest things can be hard to accomplish with alchohol involved lol.

Yeah I'll definitely let you know what I think of it. I only have 23k on my car now and it's been slowly slipping worse and worse for a while now but ESECIALLY since I switched to an eblend. Not rolling into the throttle in any gear just really wasn't an option (to avoid either wheel spin or clutch slip depending on the gear), so hopefully I won't have to worry about the clutch slip part of things anymore at least!

Yeah seriously. My local dealer quoted me for an 8 hour job, which works out to be over a grand after taxes! Screw that!

I'll be doing this one myself. Granted truth be told, I've never done a clutch swap on a fwd car before, BUT I've dropped many rwd, and 4wd drivetrains so hopefully it won't be too awfull.... hopefully.. ::crosses fingers::

You have to drop the suspension and front cradle. It is not an easy job. Will need re-alignment after.

Yeah I'm not exactly excited about doing it.

I'm pretty confident about getting it done in a reasonable time frame though. How much clearance will I need under the car do you think (I'm obviously doing this on stands in my garage). I have 30" stands and was figuring that "should" be enough clearance to drop everything, but without ever doing it before that part of the job is my biggest concern.

Also, can you leave the struts attached and just pop the hub assembly off the spindle, and the tie rods?

If you are strong enough to pick up a 100lb trans and sit it in the car, you can wedge a piece of 2x4 in front of the harmonic balancer, loosen the passenger side sub frame bolts, then just take out the drivers side sub frame bolts and drop the drivers side.

But I hear ya on pulling money away from another project. My built engine pulled away from my apartment money I had saved up. But my stock block was still good apparently so I guess I can sell it to someone else if I don't keep it....

Took me 2 days with a lift my first time. If I had to do a clutch job I could probably get it done in 5 hours or less.

Wow. I definitely did not know that before. Better start treating mine better. The only problem is having fun is to much fun. I don't think I treat it bad. I rarely dump it.

To the op, serves you right for doing that while you've been drinking. But seriously, that sucks. Good luck with the new one.

No, you still have to remove them. The passenger side half shaft will come out as you pull on the trans. The drivers side can be pulled out as you unbolt the strut from either the steering knuckle or the strut tower...

Sorry, I just figured that was common sense...

My first time... Well I was driving spirited for a while, and going from first to second it would spin. Well after like the 3rd time I did that in a 15 minute period I went from 1st to 2nd and pinned it. RPM's sat at 5k rpm for a few seconds and I thought hmm.

Pull into the parking lot at Menards and get out... OHH it stunk! The smell of burnt clutch is horrendous, and it takes a long time to leave the car! I took it easy on it from there out, but anytime I put any sort of hard load on it in 2nd or 3rd it would slip. Since, I got the ZZP stage 3 and a new GM flywheel. Love it.

I thought about doing it myself, and I don't trust any dealers around here, so it being a pain in the ass to do I just drove to ZZP and paid the $450 labor for their install. Well worth it, they know their **** and work on these stupid things all day.

don't have to align it. there is only one way everything can go back together. if in doubt use a paint marker and line everything back up exactly the same...but the spines have a funny groove that only goes in one way.

yes you can. and you will be fine with jack stands. just get it up real high and you will have plenty of room. we even used a picker to hold the engine and still had enough room under the car.
