Limited Slip Differntial?

Hey guys, quick question, Im shopping for a 2010 Cobalt SS and a lot do not have the LSD in my area for some reason, that shouldn't even be an option, should come standard. My question is, would the dealer install one if I decided I wanted it after I purchased the car? I spoke to one salesman and he said it prob would not be a good idea, not sure y?

thanks

I'm sure the dealer will do it no problem, but I'm guessing he said it's not a good idea due to the high cost of swapping the open diff to an LSD. Cost of parts and labor at the dealer for something like this will set you back quite a few pennys

I was in the same boat..really wanted one with LSD. I came across a screamin' deal that didn't have LSD and I bought it. The car handles fantastic (no LSD). If you're going to TRACK the car on a road corse then that's a big plus. I don't think it helps with drag racing..maybe someone else can chime in on that.

you know what to look for in a stock one? G85 option.

Aftermarket will cost you some bucks to have it installed. Almost better off buying a used trans with lsd in it and just swap yourself. But Id say try and find a stock car with it already in it. IMO one of the worse decisions GM made on the SS was the lsd as an option...just horrible. all should of came with it.

I see it as a necessity if you're going to drive in snow/ice IMO. It's helped me a lot.

Otherwise we do carry the Quaife LSD one, in which you can have installed in your tranny. It is the same company who makes them for GM for the factory installed ones.

LSD is most beneficial for handleing in corners.

I had the same problem as the OP. Couldn't find one with an LSD.... bought the car... a few weeks later, there was a white one (it was in another state) that had LSD that was about the same price as mine Not sure if I would want a white SS though... Then again, I'm starting to regret getting it in black

LSD was a dealbreaker for me. I was not gonna buy one without it and I will never buy another performance car without one.

That being said the Cobalt is not made anymore and you will be hard pressed to find one with an lsd. And they are only going to get harder to find.

It should list it in the build options as G85 and it should list it on the window sheet with all the car details if it has it.

make them include it with the purchase of the car. im sure they can make it happen if they want your money.

LSD is an option. Dealer install.... unlikely. As someone else said, that's going to costs them more than just a pretty penny. Best bet is to find one with LSD already installed. Or you could always see if you can find a used tranny and have it swapped out for the one in your car. I, personally, would rather just buy a brand new tranny from CED or a Quaife, but the trees have yet to grow me the money for it

And as others have said, if you live in an area where you get snow or you autocross, then, LSD is the way to go. Seeing as I live in the South and see snow once in a decade.

no kidding id understand if it was a 1500-3000$ option but at 500 dollars its a no brainer you could pay more for an engine cover lol.

i believe C&D did the skid pad testing and the sedan tests that the cobalt won with a non LSD car both times. just saying it set those skid pads without an lSD im sure it could muster a few more points with it.

Probably because Canada is covered in ice and snow for 6 months a year.

^This. Like I said earlier, LSD is essential for places like that. I live in the South. It's no wonder there aren't many vehicles down here with LSD. Perhaps my tranny will decide to break down on me and I can get the dealer to swap my tranny with LSD

I doubt GM would allow C+D to test the car without an LSD, without it, the car is useless. Coming from someone who owned an 03 SRT4, before they had the LSD, big smoke show every corner exit up to 80 mph. FWIW, the quaife won't do much in really deep snow, they need a side load to work, they are not like a standard clutch diff,. which is why they aren't very effective for drag racing. One wheel on ice, other on pavement, doesn't really do much. Works wonderfully on a road course though.
