Lnf for $500?

Going to look at this lnf hhr this week. Guy wants $500 for it.

It has around 100k on it.

He said while he was driving, it just shut off. No noise. No smoke. Gets out of the car and saw oil underneath it. So I'm assuming it needs a motor? I asked if there were any holes in the block (even though he said it wasnt making any noise) and said he didnt see any.
Still think its a decent buy for 500. Worst case I part it out.

But is there a chance it could be something other than the motor? Doubtful. But wishful thinking.

Does it sound like engine failure to you? It's a 2008. I can't remember which years had block issues.
besides the tear in the driver seat and arm rest it looks decent.
Ive never had an lnf. But numerous lsjs and l61s.
may make a good beater. Or give it to my girl. Havent fully decided yet. Just feel It could either be useful or make me money in a part out.

Maybe it was timing failure? Hard to tell just by the info he gave. And yeah 08 is the one with porous block but that wouldn't cause engine oil to drip

I'm calling BS on the 100k. That interior is USED. Looks like the pax seat was replaced? If it "just shut off" and there's oil leaking I think you can write off the motor. What's left that you could even part out? I'd get a better example before I put a bunch of money in this just to get it running, let alone get the interior good enough that I don't have to worry about getting an STD every time I drive it.

Supposedly the timing chain was done at 90k as precautionary measure. wont be able to tell until I see the tensioner.
Info is lacking.

He says it's really like 97xxx. I'll ask for a pic prior to the drive out there.
it does look beat up. Especially that driver seat.
I figured if motor was toast, suspension (lowered is the only thing done) wheels, downpipe, and the trans is a 4t45 iirc.
then rad, fans, maybe the turbo? Pcm etc.
Seats are probably worthless torn up like that. And std infested. Lmao

I dunno, I see lots of red flags. I don't see how the seats and arm rest could look that bad with 97k miles. Mine has 120k and the bolsters have just a little bit of wear through at the stitching. That's it. The price is good, but even then it may be much more trouble than it's worth to strip the good parts.

You'll be surprised lol for example my 2017 impala driver seat is already ripping from the deiver side yet my lnf seats look great. I guess it just depends. I still see he can make more than 500 back if he sold the good parts just my opinion. Will it take time probably but I think its worth it

To me, the only way seats and an arm rest can look that bad with less than 100 thou miles if you really don't give an F about the car and treat it as such. And saying that, you don't treat the mechanical of the car good but make the interior look like that. Conclusion - the whole car has likely been treated the same way as that disgusting interior.

I've pretty much come to the conclusion IF I buy it I will part it out.
obviously I'll still try to haggle the price down.
Waiting on more pics now. I'm hoping the body panels are decent. I'm sure base model guys would jump on that stuff.

I sell on eBay a lot too. So that will help

He said he will get me more pics tomorrow.
I asked again what the deal with the motor is.
said there's still oil in it, he thinks maybe the turbo locked up.
does that even make sense?

not if the symptom is the engine dying. it is pretty clear he doesn't know what's going on, so it could be a simple fix or something catastrophic. if it were me i'd negotiate based on the latter.

Buy the car for the rims, sell the rest to a junkyard.

pretty sure some HHR SSs had different seat based on the options. My HHR SS had a power drivers seat and manual passenger seat. I think they were different as well.

Well he is down to 400 and I havent even made it there yet. Still waiting in my calipers to come in. I dont trust my daily to make a 2 hour drive. Lmao

Ive determined I'll buy it either way.
If it needs a motor ill part it out.
If it's something else I'll fix it and flip it.
either way I'll make money, so I'm good with that.

Yep. Clean texas title.
He found a redline he wants that needs a trans (doesn't make sense to me, but whatever) .
I'll still try to get him down a bit more. But unless my girl magically falls in love with it it will leave in pieces or as a good daily for someone.
