Looking at a local 08 SS for sale - question about value

I have been itching for a new DD. I currently drive an 09 G5 (which is a cobalt ... but sexier *grabs flame suit*), but it is boring as hell of course. I love the turbo cobalt builds and hear great things about them. I have a 96 WS6 and a 86 VFR750 as my toys, and I need a more exhilarating daily.

Anyway, I found a 08 SS for sale in a local car club of mine. My issue is, it has 264k miles on it. The guy is a good member of the club so I think it probably isn't a bad car but I wanted some input from guys who actually know these cars.

What should I look for? From googling all I can tell is porous blocks, but at that mileage I think that issue would have happened already.

He said he has a spare LNF motor/trans to go with it (he was toying with swapping that into his saturn ION lol). He is clearing his house out I guess? He wants $6000. Too much or is that right even though its high mileage?

Thanks guys!

264k miles ??? hahahaha keep looking

sc4door 07-06-2015 09:23 AM

I'd say that's too much money. Honestly, I've never seen an LNF with that many miles so I wouldn't know a fair price, but I can tell you I wouldn't pay anywhere near that much with that many miles

hahahaha I figured 6k was steep. I was going to offer like $4500 due to the high mileage. He said he thinks it was rebuilt at some point and he said the trans was replaced. if I can chisel it down a bit I think it may be worth it. I'm handy myself so I'm not scared of stuff breaking. I just don't want to overpay in the beginning :D lol.

What do you think it's worth? I know 264 is a lot, but for an 08 it has to be a commuter car. my GF has a 2014 focus with 45k on it already LOL. she drives A LOT for work so I can totally see this car getting that many miles and not being abused you know? or maybe im just a sucker

yellowsupercharged06 07-06-2015 09:54 AM

at that point its going to become another project car because its always going to need something fixed. If you want to have a reliable DD i would look for one with a hell of a lot less miles on it and pay a little more.

ThoR294 07-06-2015 10:05 AM

yeah true. I just got excited one was local lol

yellowsupercharged06 07-06-2015 10:11 AM

im sure there are plenty in NJ lol ... look on car selling sites

2009 Chevy Cobalt SS Excellent Condition Turbo

:O

ForceFedDork 07-06-2015 11:30 AM

As much as I am biased towards the LNF and frankly i think that the engine and probably the trans are fine, everything around it is basically done for. Someone mentioned NJ, in that case I would not buy anything with that many miles in a state that salts the roads. Patience grass hopper, u'll find the right car, among all these people that are over pricing the crap out of it.

exninja 07-06-2015 11:38 AM

With that many miles, they've got to be all highway miles so the body might not be THAT bad. Still seems pretty steep tho. It's kinda crappy that he THINKS it was rebuilt. So you'd have to consider it original. What's the condition of the spare motor/trans? If he comes down some those spare parts might help make it worth it if you're into that.

ThoR294 07-06-2015 11:39 AM

I am in NJ. You'd be surprised at what you can find lol. Sometimes you can find good stuff or sometimes you can find stuff that is rotting away. I agree, I think I'll be patient. I just have no clue on the value of these cars so I figured I'd ask here!

turbocharged717 07-06-2015 11:44 AM

I'd keep looking if it were me. I can't justify the amount of money for all the miles regardless if it has a second motor and trans. I think you're money could be spent better elsewhere. But that's me

hawkssoccer11 07-06-2015 11:46 AM

you can find a decent turbo ss with80-100k for around 8-11k easy. my buddy just got an 09 ss 4dr and it had 90k on it for 8 so if your patient or wanting to drive a little in the tri state area you can find some deals.

Devin86 07-06-2015 12:00 PM

30k a year since new. With a rebuild motor and trans. Its 8 years old and good on gas it's gonna have some miles lol but that's not the issue it sounds like sombody blew the engine if u keep these things maitnace up u should not need a new motor unless ur pushing it haha

Yeah. a 4 door would be fun (i have owned so many 2doors, and having a 4door is nice for carting stuff around, and people). if I can net this thing for dirt cheap though it may be worth it. like mentioned, for 80k miles it'll cost me 8-11k, if I can get this one for half of that. heres a picture.

May just hold off for a 4 door as well. I need to sell my G5 first lol. cant have 4 cars in the driveway!

Also, he said the spare lnf/trans was for an MR2 :O

I remember that guy. He gave up on that project pretty quick. The car is my favorite color but I wouldn't pay any amount of money for a cobalt with that many miles.

ThoR294 07-06-2015 03:09 PM

Even if I can sell the swap for ~$2800 and get the car for less? ha. I should just stop convincing myself and wait for a lower mileage one. I'm just hating life driving an auto base model g5 lol

When you mentioned MR2 I remembered the listing.

No considering he never sold it...

What do they actually go for?

exninja 07-06-2015 03:35 PM

Tough to say. Not much like that comes up here. You can try ebay, they occasionally have engines and transmissions from wrecks on there.

jgerma01 07-06-2015 03:41 PM

Wow $6000 for a an 08 with 264K miles on it(impressive for the LNF). I'm thinking of selling my 2010 with 59k miles on it for 12K and was told by a few buyers that it was too much $$$ but I wouldnt part with it for less then 12k......I have very few mods......GMS1 with a hahn catted DP and MPX catback
but car is in great condition other then a few scratches

I think he doesn't want to spend that much money if he's looking for something for half of your asking price. Good luck with your sale though, it will take the right buyer.
