Lowering Springs VS. Coilovers
Lowering Springs VS. Coilovers
Any lowering springs out there safe to run on stock struts? Or are coilovers just better in the long run? Not looking to slam, just clean up the wheel gap, considering the SSC lowering springs? Anyone with some input would be appreciated. Read the coilover thread and got some great info & pics, just looking for some reliability info. Thanks guys.
Your stock struts in the long run will eventually collapse probably, but maybe not. I have an 06 with 99k and I am lowered on H&Rs and my stock struts are still good...Even if you have to replace your struts, itll be cheaper than coils.
i would do megan racing or bc coilovers, because you will want them later on for looks and performance, and for 8-900, is well worth doing it at one time, rather than 2-300 for springs, then 3-600 for struts later, then all the labor involved...gl
There is another guy on here selling his for $400 plus shipping. I'm not sure who it is...I remember that they were stuck and couldn't be adjusted because of the adjustor was broke or something. Maybe search the classifieds for "coilovers"
If I remember, I will PM you and let you know.

most can run lowering springs for a while with no issues... thats the route i've gone with no struts yet. however the ride quality is worse for reasons that the strut is not travelling the distances it was meant to do originally
If you really want ride quality then coilovers probably aren't your best bet. They're going to give you the harshest ride but also provide you with the most drop. Pedders lower the car a bit. They offer a fairly good ride. If you don't track or push the car often/ at all then they're a fairly good option and can be had everywhere now. there have been a few members that had problems with them collapsing after they were pushed continuously to their limits. Sportlines are right around the lowest but I wouldn't recommend them. They are insanely soft and offer very little in regards to performance. Powell has just released his new YYZ springs which from every review I've read are said to handle amazing. This is a spring that is geared towards the performance minded. It will out handle stock springs without question but will look just about identical to them as well. For coilovers I would have to say you're going to get what you pay for. There is a reason Megan is so cheap and the others are 1 1/2 times as much. I had Stances on my cobalt and they held up great. I will say you most likely aren't going to want to run coilovers through winter. As far as aftermarket springs on the stock struts you'll be fine. As long as you aren't doing anything to abusive to your car you shouldn't have any issues. The factory TC shocks and struts are definitely quality parts. Depending, sway bar end links are something you may want to consider as well. Hope this helps.
I have these. I will say they drop, very nicely handle a little better so to speak maybe only cause the cause is lowered. It is pretty damn bouncy though. I love them and have tracked with them many times and held up great. I might be looking into KW coils for my next mod.
Coilovers do not give you the harshest ride I know this for a fact.
I started out dropping my car with B&G springs on stock FE1 struts/shocks. It was a very stiff ride but I was ok with it. I ran those for approximately 50,000 miles over a period of about 2.5 years. Shocks and struts held up just fine.
I have now just switched over to BC coilovers and these things ride AMAZING compared to my old drop springs. The ride quality is WAY WAY smoother and less stiff/harsh. Especially with the adjustable dampening on the shocks and struts. I love these things. For $900 I wish I would have gotten them in the first place but like I said the B&G's were still acceptable to me and I had no problems with them.
If you want a cheap and effective drop with a stiff but not rugged ride get springs.
If you want to spend the extra money and have a nice ride and sit low all at once, get coilovers.
That's my story from experience with those particular brand of products. I will never look back after installing the BC coilovers. I love them.

Out if the suspension setups that I've had coilovers have definitely been the harshest/stiffest ride. They handle incredibly I'll say that, But I think for daily driving I felt the most with them. Also depends how low you go. Not gonna start an e-battle. Definitely surprised your springs were a more harsh ride.
Not looking for a battle. Just stating my experience. The B&G springs sit really low compared to most springs so I think that is one reason why the were more harsh. With my new coilovers the back sits about a 1/4 inch higher and the front sits about an 1/8 inch lower. The springs had the reverse rake thing going on and the Coilovers corrected that to give me a very slight forward rake.
I installed CCM/SSC springs on my car and ran them from 40k miles on the car to abour 95k miles on the car and only one of my original front struts finally went. i ended up switching over to coilovers since i wanted more of a drop
and.... lol. How was the differnece in the coils. What did you buy.. etc fill us in!
I really want coilovers, I just don't know if I want to drop that much $ on mostly appearance. But every time I see one stanced I want em again! Grrrr
I have the Ksport Kontrol coilovers installed now, the Springs had a better ride and werent as rough as the coilovers are but im alot lower on the coilovers then the springs. Springs were a 1.9r 1.6f drop and currently on the coilovers im lowered around 3.5 front and back
