Need to get an Ecotec SS Turbocharged Motor
Need to get an Ecotec SS Turbocharged Motor
Hello Everyone,
I have been working on this OffRoad project and I thought an Ecotec 2.2 crate motor would have enough power and I was wrong….I need more power, so I ask Turnkey where I got the crate motor from …what can I do to get more power…and they told me what I should do is put to Turbo on and only run it at 3lb of boost with the stock motor….and it would cost about $3800 for them to do it.
So I have been looking around to see if I can find one of the Ecotec Turbocharged 260hp motors that come in the newer Cobalt SS…and I can’t seem to find any crate motors with the wiring harness.
Can anyone help me out and tell me what I can find one ready to drop in the car and how much they are?
This is the offroad project that I’m working on just so you can get the idea of what I’m doing

looks like ZZP has 2:
Cobalt & Ion ---> ZZ Performance
and also if you contact tom at crate engine depot he could probably take care of you, also.

the LNF isnt made as a crate engine. You could get an engine but you'd need to get a wiring harness separate. Or find a totaled car and pull it from that. How much power do you need? There are plenty of options.
2.2
turbo
supercharge
LSJ 2.0 supercharged
LNF 2.0 turbo (probably the hardest option)

I know there have been a few totaled lnfs recently, a shame really but it will happen...
OP your best bet is a LSJ supercharged motor, then if you want turbo that. They can be tuned to run straight E85 with a swap of injectors. The LNF can only run a max of E47 (mix with 91 and E85). The LSJ is a balsy motor with a small pully 80lbs injectors running E85 with supporting mods.
By the way I just noticed you are in HB, I have HP tuners software and I work with a really good tuner on here who can get the LSJ or the LNF to do some serious work. Let me know if you need a hand.

Hello RyRidesMotox,
you have to excuse me...all of this Ecotec motor stuff is new to me.
I don't know what the lSJ,E85,E47 stuff means.
Not sure if we can do something to the motor I have or should i look into getting one of these other motors...I would like it to be reliable
Let me know what you think

Off soap box now
the LSJ crate engine is no longer produced you could get a lsj pulled from an SS or get a real Crate engine

I drive my car everyday to work and the tune made all the difference with the LNF it is reliable so not to worry. I used a trfecta tunable/hp tuners combo that was tuned by Terminator2. That is the way to go for sure. You will pull the front end off the ground with the power I have over the back wheels like that for sure haha. That would be funny.
If it was me an LSJ with a turbo swap would net you a seriously fast baja bug, that is what I would go with. Someone else on here is bound to have another idea about it though.

if your offroading id want the supercharger for the instant torque and power if your goign to climb something etc instead of waiting for boost to build. my buddy has a supercharged grand cherokee and absolutly loves it. probably a lsj motor is goign to be easier and cheaper to come across as well. just my .02 tho
I am sorry man, if you do not know what LSJ, E85, and E47 mean maybe you should not be diving into the tuner world. Maybe a small block chevy or similar crate engine would be a better choice for you.

Honestly I'm not too sure about the lower end of the 2.2 liter you currently have and whether it's forged or not. The lower on the LNF is and I believe the LSJ is also. The LNF is the turbo charged direct injection motor, the LSJ is the Supercharged motor from the previous generation of the cobalt ss. E85 is the ethanol fuel. The E85 will allow more timing, more boost and more power. The LSJ is easier to use E85 in because you just need to swap injectors. The LNF does not currently have aftermarket support (that I am aware of) for larger injectors. The LSJ is arguably an easier motor to mod but the LNF with just a tune will get to the numbers you want. Plus you said its going in a bug so no need to worry about smog. An E85 mix with 91 octane is E47, most of the faster LNFs run this in their motors. E85 is possible with extra injectors in the intake mani, check ZZP for that, I think they are currently running/ testing a setup like that.

I didn't know what engine codes etc. before I got the car, I couldn't tell you the engine codes for a Toyota. Hell, I just learned what E47 is. Instead of basically calling him a tool try sending him a link or something he can learn what it is.

Good luck getting an LSJ or LNF to work in your application, you'll need a standalone ECU and some way to work that into the throttle-by-wire system.
Talk to TurnKey and see if they could come up with something, it wouldn't be a whole lot different than a 2.2L Ecotec.
