Question Oil Change questions

This will be my first oil change since purchasing the vehicle. My SS/TC is my absolute baby and am gonna keep her FOREVER. I plan on using Mobile 1 or Royal Purple, I scheduled an oil change for tomorrow at GM, but the lady told me they only do full synthetic GM brand oil. IDK how good that is or not , but I wanna use the absolute best for my engine regardless of price.

I am taking a 400 mile trip on Sunday (both ways) and the dealer I bought the vehicle from says 16500 next oil change. I am currently at 16035 with %46 oil life remaining. Should I get the oil changed before I go and take my trip? or am I being too paranoid with my car? lol

P.S. I don't know what kind of oil is in my vehicle at the time. Dealer just told me they put a full synthetic blend and I got the vehicle at 12500 miles.

Thanks for any help or pointers.

Your car asks for Mobil 1 5w-30. The oil cap tells you when you take it off. There is no “full synthetic blend”. It’s either full synthetic or a synthetic blend.

Its real easy. I worked at toyota. Just tell them u want mobil 1 in the car. Any dealer should have it in stock. At toyota we had our own crappy synthetic and i never put it in my car. Mobil 1 is the way to go ha. I personally like doing my oil changes myself. I just dont trust mechanics especially when i am one. They do oul changes all day so they rush it and not often but sometimes will **** something up like forget to toghten the drain plug or leave ur oil cap off or at the least get oil on or in ur car. Thats just me tho.

I'd use the mobil 1. Who knows what the gm blend actually is.

Since your olm is at 46% you don't need an oil change for quite some time. Unless its been in there for a long time and you are going by that instead of miles.

When your olm gets down to around 0-10%. Depends on your driving but it works out to around 8k miles for me.

Yea man I know a lot of people are **** when it comes to that, but I commute so much that if I changed mine ever 3500 it would be like a month and a half. I usually go about 6-7k miles

mobil one full synthetic will never break down. With the advances in oil you can go alot of miles without needing to change it. With the being said your filter can only effectively filter the oil for 5000 miles. they have oil that is gauranteed to 15k miles now but if u read the back it says change your filter every 5k. Do not exceed 5000 miles on the oil filter period regardless if the oil still looks good or not

So for instance, mine said due at 16500 miles. I am still at 47%, you're telling me to go by percent??? dosen't seem correct.

Anyways, I did mine early as I have a small road trip ahead of me. changed mine at 16000 instead of 16500

I've brought this up before but I'll do it again.

Oil change people recommend 3k miles. Why? It's their source of income. The more they change the more they make. The less they change the less they make.

GM (and other oem's) may go longer. They don't get money for oil changes so they don't benefit from shorter intervals. If their engines have oil problems from going too long they end up with a bad reputation and potentially costly warranty work.

Better oils and machining processes have reduced the need for such frequent oil chances like in the past.

Why not? That would put you close to 8k miles on your oil change. GM is hardly the only company using an olm and its not a new technology.
