Rattles check-in
#55
My 05 Scion tC rattled in the hatch and sun roof both of which are extremely common for every year not just the 1st one. Both showed up in less than 5k miles. After numerous trips to the dealer they never found anything wrong. The sun roofs come off the tracks (I fixed it myself 3 times) and there are multiple causes for the hatch (struts, pins that hold the interior break, hinges).
My 08 SS/TC has no rattles at 7,400 miles.

It's a quality vehicle overall, and despite the few little annoyances in the interior fit & finish, I couldn't be happier with it.

Over all am happy with it, and engine and trans have been top notch, but I think I'm going to be looking into a WRX or 350Z when my balt goes back next summer...

x2 force. and like i was saying spend 500 and a few days sound dampening the whole car and it will be quieter then any "stock" car out there luxury or not. still cheaper and better then any honda or toyota which aren't really any better noise wise.
the whole issue with rattles most of the time has to do with how cars are made/built now not on who makes them or the quality of the parts. There are a few legitimate manufacture defects shown in this thread but most are because the car wasnt put together 100% correctly. one panel slightly off will rattle with another one ect ect

Can you make a post or write up a "how to" article about sound dampening? It sounds like you have done this to your Cobalt and you know what you are doing. I never heard that you could sound damp a car before. Can someone with no experience do this to their car without damaging it?

sound dampening is actually the easy part. getting the panels out tends to be difficult if you havent done it before. I belive there is a how to written by halfcent but im not sure if it goes over getting the panels out or not. He just used a vibration mat but if you also use a barrier product like second skin lux liner pro on the doors and quarter panels you would be surprised how quiet it gets

I don't have any one rattle that stands out. But it's not quiet. There's various little noises from the interior. GM is one of the absolute worst for interior rattles though.
Hey guys, with the sounds deadening... do you use the spray on stuff or like dynomat?

Not enough to cause buyer's remorse for me, it's annoying but expected. Let's be honest here, we're getting a borderline (some would say bona fide) sports car for well under $30k. I could go on with my thoughts about union-built cars and domestics in general, but at the end of the day we all got a huge bargain.

I'm with you on unions 100% but thats a discussion for another day.

I was talking with my father who's a test driver and works at GM's Milford Proving Grounds. We were talking about this very issue with the Cobalt and he was telling me how in his experience he's noticed that the cars that have been coming with low pro tires have been having more issues, probably due to there being less of a cushion and the chassis and suspension absorbing more shock, due to there being less clearance between the rim and tire...

^ I believe it.
Funniest thing with our low pros is I can't tell you how many people (trying to be nice, and I always thank them) that tell me that my tire pressure is low....

I worked for lexus and ended up using leftover rattle kits with felt and foam tape to get rid of most of my rattles. Im sure when I took my car in for warranty they were probably saying WTF?!?!?!?
