As your Cobalt is a 2009, it is very well may still within its Bumper-to-Bumper warranty. If you were to private message me, I could check on the warranty parameters of your vehicle (specific date and mileage of expiration) and check into any open recalls. I do need to use the last 8 digits of your VIN to do this check.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:
In rare instances a technician may comment they hear a short, sharp rattle noise from the front of the engine at start up. P0011 P0014 P0016 or P0017 may also set during this condition.
Recommendation/Instructions:
If the noise is from the front accessory drive area, inspect the engine belt. We have seen concerns with engine belts causing a loud ticking type noise. If found, verify power steering pulley outer edge is aligned flush with shaft and repair as needed. If pulley alignment is correct replace the engine belt.
If the noise is still present and is very short and sharp in duration (2-5 seconds). This may be an issue with the cam phasers not parking properly. Once the noise is verified as the phasers, they must be replaced. If the cam phasers are replaced, remove the CMP actuator solenoids to inspect for debris. If debris is found, clean and inspect for torn or loose screens and replace solenoid if necessary.
Note: If debris is found in the solenoids and phasers, change the oil and filter before returning to service, In some instances it may be necessary to change the oil/filter multiple times with a test drive in between each one. The filter and solenoids can be inspected afterwards to ensure no additional debris is present.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

Mine's done this forever, and it's a 2008 so weird it's not covered by the TSB. It's rare but I know the noise you're talking about, and generally only does it when it starts to cool off.
im bringing my car into the dealer to see if they can figure out the problem.

could it be the cam chain tensioner. ive read all over the place on here that people have been replacing them cause when its cold at start up it makes a noise. its more of a rachety clanking noise. ( probably the cam chain slapping around )
i could be wrong..... and it might not be your problem... but its a very loud noise though. and iam having the same thing happen when starting the car. mines an 08tc

yea idk. i guess we will see what the dealership says. but yea it only lasts for about a second or 2 right when i fire it up.
totally jacked this thread lol
I've heard this ...... sounds like a dry motor.....like 1st start after an oil change almost. I havent heard it in a year or so . I don't want to say the oil makes a difference but............ I changed to amsoil a year ago and havent heard it since..... prolly just a coincidence thou.
I get the same noise every now and then when she's cold but necessarily if its cold outside. I'm pretty sure it's bc the oil has drained off of everything and its running dry for that quick sec at startup.
just had my car into mauer chev and my car didnt have a CEL on the dash but the tech said there was a code there,a P0011 code. not sure of the name of the code but they replace the cam valves...i guess lol
the tech said at first when i showed him the bulliten that a CSS member had posted on this thread and he said "cam phasers? that would be a tear down, gotta pull the cover off"
they installed a 12646783:valve
and a 12646784:valve
i think that is the GM number possibly?
but if your under warranty, theres a bulliten on this and i waited for my car. i guess we will see if the noise is still there tomorrow morning when i fire her up for work!
