Sea Foam question ?

So yesterday I sea foamed my 09 tc. I put 1/3 in the oil. 1/3 in the gas and then the rest through the vacuum line like in the how to video. It seemed to smoke a fair amount and seems to be more responsive now. But my question is this morning when I started the car up after sitting all night the car seemed to off out some whites brownish black smoke for the first 5 seconds it was running. Then it cleared up and was normal. Is that Normalbtobhave happen after sea foaming the next say ? Like maybe it didn't all get burned out yesterday? I really only took it for a short drive . Maybe ten minutes. Or did I ruin my engine and my valve seals got eaten by the sea foam or maybe my piston rings are allowing it to burn oil now ? Any thoughts ?

Just leftovers in the intake manifold. No worries. It'll stop after a good drive.

I hope you are right. So a ten to fifteen minute drive after sea foaming still isn't a long enough drive to clear it all out ? I'm gonna hang myself if I ruined my valve seals and or piston oil control rings. I thought this stuff was engine safe ?

My bet is you haven't used the entire tank of fuel you put the Seafoam into yet. It's gonna smoke until that fuel is all used.

You can't ruin your seals or rings by using Seafoam, it's just Isopropyl Alcohol, a thin oil referred to as "pale oil", and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naphtha.

MSDS sheet: http://seafoamsales.com/wp-content/u...seafoam_EN.pdf

You're fine... but you're supposed to change your oil within 100 miles after putting it in

I changed my oil late last night our of paranoia and added another 10 dollars of fuel to the gas tank. Its a really nerve racking experience. Lol . ;-). I can say that at least the valves and tops of the pistons are no doubtable cleaner then they were. When I was doing it . The car almost stalled. And I got an engine light for random cylinder miss fire. As well as miss fires on cylinder one and two. And then a deactivation code for cylinder one. I cleared them and it has been good sense . They all popped up whole I was sucking up the seafoam from a cup into the vac line.

So 2.5 gallons?

That's normal, you're burning something the car doesn't expect so it messes with the combustion process.

How long do you guys figure it will take to burn it all off. I didn't drive the car at all really on Sunday other then to go to the corner store just down the road for my wife. But this morning when I started it. It still looks like it is puffing abit of whitish crap ( maybe a little brownish too ) on inital start up. It's really got me bummed out. It only doea it after sitting all night. If it only sits for a a hour or two it doesnt do it at all. Only if it sits for a good while. Im feeling pretty bummed that I might have caused my car to burn oil on start up !! FML.....

I haven't burnt the whole tank of gas yet. I probably only have about 100 Km on it so far sense sea faoming the car. Thats about 60 miles so far. But i only put about 150-200 ml in the tank. And some in the oil. ( Chnaged as of Saturday night ) And I let the car suck up the rest of the can. It is getting colder where I live also. But can't helo but feel that this is a direct result of me messing with my car when I shoundn't have. HAs anyone else ever noticed anything like this after sea foaming ? I sarting to sound like a broken record ! Getting on my own nerves !

P.s - I do about ten minutes of high way driving to work ever morning and again on the way home.

I hope you are right ! But i'm sure many of you can understand how I feel at the moment. I bet many people would post the same if they saw the crap that came out of my tail pipe the next morning too. I took a look at Sea Foams main web page. And they claim that it is safe for all seals and gaskets ? But that hasn't prvided me with any comfort yet ! Only my car not smoking will do that ! :-( This has been the worst preventativre maintance EVER !!!

Well after a few days of driving it still seems like my car is puffing what looks like mostly white-ish somke the split second it starts up. A fairly small cloud and is instantly gone and cleared up. I was looking around on you tube and found a few videos of other lnf's on cold start up. And it apperars there are other Cobalts that do the same thing. I may take a video of mine in the next day or so. But in the mean time. Does this video from youtube once the car starts and puff some white smoke look normal ? This is pretty much exactly what mine does.

Video 1 ( About 8-9 seconds in )

Video 2 ( Easier too see the smoke in Full Screen ) ( About 19-20 Seconds in )

Does this look normal at all ? To me they look like worn valve seals causing oil to be burnt on initial start up. But I dont really know because the smoke doesn't look very blueish at all.

Deep breath bro. You will be fine. Almost positive my LNF does it. Never stood at the back of the car on startup though.

On other note: I've used seafoam on my LNF as well as my ION without issue.

you are DEFINATLY over reacting ..... Go for a highway drive, go for an hour long drive just to give you peace of mind and burn off the rest of that gas.

Your car is O K

every vehicle in the history of vehicles will throw a little smoke when it first starts up, ESPECIALLY if its boosted, and ESPECIALLY if its colder out side.

( Condensation , and the fuel left ontop of the pistons picking up that little bit of carbon )

That is normal just the cold start enrichment fuel vapor out the exhaust. The cat isn't hot yet so you see the fuel vapor.

Take the car on a hot run. I use seafoam once a year and no issues. Used in 1/3's, it's diluted pretty good in a full tank.

I read the side of the can. And it says it is safe to put it in the crankcase oil. Has anyone else ever poured a bit. About 1/3 of the seafoam into there oil just before changing it ?

I seafoam my engine every single oil change and have yet to have any negative issues as a result of it. I personally have never put any in my crank case, particularly considering all of the detergents that are in modern synthetics oils, so I just haven't seen a need for it. Either way, I doubt that your engine was hurt as a result of running seafoam through it.
