SS/TC spare question
SS/TC spare question
The 2009 Cobalt SS that I'll pick up in a couple of days has all the options I want... except the spare tire. Think it just comes with a can of fix-a-flat or something. Since I live out in the country, I want to get a spare. Are the SS/TC spares unique or are they the same as any Cobalt. If they are all the same, I can probably find one in a salvage yard.
spare tire
I do believe the optional spare tire has a repair kit of some sort probably one of those cans of run flat and it also comes with a compressor. Wow what a good deal. lol. Heard you ordered the rpd? I asked about it on here and there is now a descussion whether or not its an available option in Canada. Keep us posted.
you pay extra for the spare and it will only fit on the rar so if you blow a tire in the front you must swap it wth a rear tire then put the donut on the rear

Not sure about other years, but the 2009 comes standard with no spare. As per the Chevrolet website: "tire sealant and inflator kit in place of spare tire." That is unless you get the spare tire option: "Tires, Spare, includes spare wheel. Requires 18" forged aluminum wheels. Replaces tire sealant and inflator kit."
As a couple of you good folks indicated, the spare does not fit on the front because of the large Brembo brakes (that is correct). If you have a flat on the front (and if you have the spare option), then you put the spare on the rear and put the good rear tire up front. If you have limited slip differential option, you want to retain tires the same size up front anyway.
72specialized, I did not order the car I bought. It was a GM program car used for display purposes at shopping malls and sporting events. While it only has about 100 miles on it, the dealership sold it to me as "used" for $6k off the MSRP. As luck would have it, it just so happens to already have the LSD, RPD, sunroof, and premium stereo options, just not the spare tire option. Yes, it does have the RPD (I test drove the car last Saturday).
Ok, back to the spare tire question. Will any Cobalt 5X110 spare wheel and tire work?

Mine is an 09' and has a spare, which I certainly did not order OR pay for. It came with the car from the factory. The only options I paid for are in my signature, and I know it wasn't bundled in without my knowing since I ended up doing more math on the deal than my sales guy did.
Here is the options and features chart straight from Chevrolet (see link).

Now look under the "wheels" category. See where it says "Tire inflator kit: includes inflator and tire sealant (no spare tire)"? The "S" there means that's standard. Trust me, the spare tire is optional on the 2009 SS. According to the Chevrolet website, the 2009 Cobalt SS spare is a $75 option if you go through their build it process.

My '08 has the spare tire option. It does NOT have the tire inflator kit. I'm 95% sure it's the same spare as the standard cobalt. I would go to a salvage yard, but double check the bolt pattern to make sure it matches. And all spare tires are recommended to be used on non-drive wheels anyway (unless you're 4WD), even my malibu's instruction manual recommends switching a good rear wheel to the front if there's a front wheel flat.
The inflator kit should come with the GM latex liquid and an inflator, same as the Corvettes, the Shelby GT500, and the Shelby GT. A lot of performance cars don't come with spare tires since the spares are quite useless.
The '08 cars only came with the spare tire, for '09 they dropped the standard space saving spare and made the sealant/inflator kit standard (spare was $75 MSRP option), and for '10 they have changed it back to a spare tire-only coming on the SS Turbo. As already mentioned, the compact spare won't fit over the front brakes and in the owner's manual they say to move a tire from the rear to the front and place the spare on the rear if you get a flat. On a side note, that's required for you to do by law when you have a compact spare in some countries like Germany. The reasoning being if the spare, which is more susceptible to blow-out, were to go out you should have it on the rear in order to maintain steering abilities better.
As to the question of adding a spare, you might check the dealer or an online GM parts place like one of the sponsors here to see how much one from GM would run. At least they could also tell you if GM has the same part number between the SS and the regular Cobalts. I think any spare from the 5-lug cars should work on the SS but that would be the best way to tell for certain. If you can run a regular Cobalt spare they should be plentiful at your local salvage yard along with the spares from other GM cars that use the same bolt pattern (Grand Am, Alero, G6, etc.) that should also work.

You realize he picked the car up like 3 months ago right?
Didn't realize they started putting a tire sealant and inflator kit. Anyone have pics of it.
I just went to nitto Nt-05's for my vette and they are non-runflats and no spare at all in the vette so this might be an option. Some people use the Continental ContiComfortKit. I've read different things though whether it can be used with TPMS (Tire Pressure Sensor Monitors).
So I am assuming that the one available with the 09 SS/TC doesn't ruin the TPMS? Anyone know how much it is?

It's a big black box thing that gets mounted where the spare tire used to sit. The GM approved latex compound is compatible with the TPMS sensors. It's probably an easy to remove substance.
Today someone parked next to me had a flat and couldn't find a lug wrench in his car. I assumed i had one like my old, SS/SC and open up the trunk to find the picture above in my trunk. We fiddled around with it for a few minutes and ended up hooking up the line with the sealant into his tire and the other inot the bottom of the sealant can. We couldn't figure it out and when it started the seal connected to the pump was loose and the goo flew everywhere. Once I got in the car it pumped it up and filled properly, filling his tire up to 30 psi. Now my question is, are these cans one time use? If so does anyone know what the replacement can would be? How much are they or where to order them?

What happened to the other Cobalt you had?
