Suggested General Maintenance Items at 100K - 2010 Cobalt SS
Suggested General Maintenance Items at 100K - 2010 Cobalt SS
Background - I recently purchased a 2010 Cobalt with 84k miles. In my intro a fellow member suggested some maintenance items. Got me thinking about preventative maintenance and wanted to expound on the initial suggestions:
General Maintenance Items @ 100K Miles
Thanks
General Maintenance Items @ 100K Miles
- Timing chain & tensioner - (suggested brands or links?)
Thanks

The owner's manual tells you the regular maintenance items, but what I highly recommend is getting the valves walnut blasted to clean them up.
As for the timing chain, you'd want to do the whole kit including the balance chain and sprockets. While you're in there, doing the water pump isn't a bad idea, since it's right there (literally) inside that part of the engine. The OEM kit for the timing chain is Cloyes btw
Since you also just bought the car, I would get the coolant and oil changed (unless they look brand new).

I'll add if no record of being done is available.
Trans fluid - 2qts 19351859(replaced 88862472)
Brake/clutch flush with a good DOT3/DOT4.
Lube door latches, known to get stuck closed.
Bushings and mounts if already considering or if they are trashed.
If 3 bar sensors are installed, verify wiring not damaged from previous/original install.
PCV valve(do with valve cleaning)

1). How many miles did you have on your car when you took the pic?
2). Which media blaster did you buy from HF? I've been trying to figure that out. (Do you have a pic if you don't have a model?)
3). Did you buy any specific attachment to cover each intake so you can feed in the blasters and vacuum at the same time?
Thanks.
As far as a 100k maintenance, this is my suggested list for a solstice but most of it applies I think.

- Inspect everything you can get your eyes on from above and underneath, and even use an inspection cam to reach hard places.
- Clean entire engine bay as best you can.
- Inspect head gasket and consider replacing if needed. (I realize that’s a big job.)
- Inspect all intake and charge tubes and hoses for turbo and intercooler. Consider replacing with all silicone (DDM). Ensure T-bolt clamps are used at all locations and consider replacing if needed.
- Replace timing and balancing chains and sprockets, all key bolts, cam sensors, valve cover gaskets, front cover gaskets and crank seal. (My valve cover gasket was hard as plastic and brittle ;-0)
- Clean valve cover inside and out.
- Replace water pump, thermostat, and all seals.
- Replace all coolant hoses. Use silicone sets where you can (e.g. DDM).
- Flush and replace coolant.
- Ensure reservoir is clean.
- (Highly recommend OEMTOOLS 244444 coolant refill kit.)
- Inspect and walnut blast intake valves.
- I tried a shortcut and did about 3 treatments with the AC Delco intake valve cleaner (heat, spray in intake while running car, sit, then when all done change oil). Need to inspect to see if it did anything.
- Replace spark plugs and ignition coils (AC Delco only).
- Inspect all wiring and wrap with heat reflective tape/coverings as needed. Any exposed plastics wire coverings will probably be brittle and toast.
- Inspect and replace missing and broken clips and hangars.
- Inspect and clean intercooler, radiator and condenser. My fins were full of all sorts of bits, bugs, grass, etc. I did the best I could but if I had time I remove them clean them completely out and then reinstall them. I realize that could be a ton of work.
- Inspect suspension and bushings and replace as needed.
- Consider replacing swaybar bushings and end links.
- Replace oil and filter.
- Replace manual transmission fluid. (I use Red Line MT-90.) - solstice
- Flush and replace rear limited slip differential fluid. (If have LSD, Red Line 57904 (75W90) Synthetic Gear Oil. No friction modifiers needed as it has it in it.) - this is for a solstice of course.
- Change brake fluid (and pads if needed).
- Clean and care for interior, seals (treat all rubber seals), clean/dray/treat convertible top (solstice again), wash and polish, etc.
- Other?

1) ~210k I'm the 2nd owner, I don't believe it's ever been done previously.
2) 50lb'r https://www.harborfreight.com/portab...rtable+blaster (course walnut media))
3) I didn't bc the engine was out and I was lazy...however I rigged something when I did this on my LFX using a piece of plywood with a hole cut in it for a piece of pvc pipe, used a coupler to connect that to my shopvac and positioned it so it covered half the port so could blast the other port. I made it so i could flip it to do the other side of the port. I'd show you a picture if I could find it but I think it got tossed when I moved. My suggestion is to get some plastic and use that to cover everything around the intake, and tape it off if doing it in car...use compressed air to blow out the port when done, and before you blast use long thin-blade screwdriver to lightly scrape the larger carbon deposits on the valve stem... everything else comes off pretty easily. I also added a piece of ~1/4 tubing to the front of my blaster held on with some hose so I could direct the blast media a bit better.
