For Those Who Powder Coated Their Brakes.
What did youi do to prep them? Did you suff them with say a scotch bright pad or did u sand blast them or did you do nothing at all to prep them?
Thanks
Thanks
are you trying to do them yourself? i know when i did my valve cover i just sanded out any imperfections i didnt think they would take care well enough. in all honesty your powdercoater should be prepping them.
The company where i am getting them powder coated does'nt do prepping. Its only gonning to cost me $46can to do front brembos and rear calipers with the brackets
Do they even need prepping bessides cleaned realy well?

I take it you are going to Piranha....
Just sand them to the finish you want (remove any casting or machining marks you don't want visible later), and give them a good prep wash with surface cleaner (camp fuel works too).
Piranha will give them another pre-clean, and tack wipe before coating them to avoid contaminants.
Edit:
Remove any decals and paint already on the calipers too. Paint stipper will do the trick.

any part to be powder coated should be blasted to remove any of the old coating. wven if it is chemicaly stripped a light blasting will insure proper adhesion of the powder to the part. The only time this would not be done if spraying powder coat over pollished alum or chrome. chrome and polished alum under powder will work but the link of the coating will not be good. flaking chipping will result I have seen it come off of chome in sheets. I find it odd that any powdercoating place will not prep parts with blasting as its just not correct no mater what chem etching is used. Just like in automotive paint its all in the prep. you can paint right over a good factory paint job with out sanding and it will look good on the short term but longer term is junk.

Any process done out here either; is done prep done in house, done by a specialized shop, or is completely disregarded due to machine turn over rate (usually annual).
Furthermore, the amount of local places specializing in sand blasting and surface restoration is phenomenal. For an already busy place, specializing in 'just' powder coating, it's not economically viable for them to venture into another market, such as surface prep.
.... cliff notes; it's just the area Sheldon and I live in.
usually metal products are blasted down to remove all of the old coating. then you need to sand out and imperfections and give it to them. they will whipe it and put something to prevent corrosion.
your correct when talking about ind kinda things but when it comes to custom coating what it looks like matters just as much as if its coated or not. to me if your going to do a half ass job powder coating it might as well paint it. ( in reguards to car and bike parts. )
