Tires

So, I've got about 4mm left on the stock crappy continentals. got almost 22k miles on the car so I can make tires last.

Finally getting my taxes back and can afford either a new set of tires or a pair or wheels and a pair of NtO1's.

I think I'd rather get the set of tires. Any good suggestions on tires? Need to have a good long life, but also work at the track. Continentals are HORRID at the track. Can't get ANY sort of good launch.

Gimme your suggestions on tires or which ya'll would rather do. Cost isn't a big thing, but sad to say I can't do both

Here was my short list that I narrowed down and ordered tires if you're curious:

- BFG KDW2 (or BFG KDW NT, numerous names used)
- Nitto NT05
- Dunlope Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec (looks to be discontinued, too bad )
- Toyo Proxes T1-R
- Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500 (no reviews available yet just released within last week or two)
- Yokohama AD08 (costly and selling like mad right now so hard to find but excellent reviews)
- Potenza RE-11 (costly)

Ended up ordering the KDW2s today and they'll be showing up Thursday, hopefully installed Friday.

That was my first choice, but trying to find a 225 was a severe pain in the ass and I'd rather not go 235 on our 7.5" wheels . Other than that, heard nothing but positive things about 'em, Nitto makes an excellent tire. I should probably add that my stockers only have 16,000km on 'em, the front (now on the rear) is kinda torched, but I'm replacing them because I don't like the Contis in the wet, at all. Imo they're horribly dangerous and are prone to hydroplaning so I figured replace them now and see how the KDWs do; my friends have said nothing but good things about 'em .

Decent performance for cheap. The Nittos are great, but at least $40 more per tire than the Generals. Generals will be a little better than the Contis at the track, but nothing like the Nittos...

Put my Falkens on last week, they stick to the road far better than the stockers. I feel the difference is night and day. I purchased the Falken Azenis RT-615 in the 235/40/18's since I also bought 18x8's. Love them!

Falken Azenis. Best tire IMO, thats what I got, great traction, and decent tread wear.

I have had horrible luck with Falken. Belt separation on one and a tire that wouldn't balance on another set. I would get this annoying vibration in the 65-75MPH range. Horrible tires.

Bridgestone Potenzas are what I have on my LS. I have put them on several cars and have had good mileage and traction.

This.

Star Specs will be my next tire in 225/45R17's once my current set is toast (most likely half way through this AutoX season).

I called close to 30 different distributors in Canada and the US and was told the same thing time and time again. No stock anywhere and no shipments in sight. Tirerack has them on their typical "clearance special" which is not usually a good sign. As an idea there are literally 15 Star Spec across Canada East Coast to West Coast. One distributor in the US (forget the name) thought they appeared to be discontinued...it's not a "for sure" thing but by all accounts they're near impossible to get short of online.

I'm hoping they're not done for good because I did really want them but got sick of searching all over the damned place for them and didn't want to order online, pay a fortune, pay more for installation and end up spending WAY too much in the long run.

They may have discontinued that size. Tire rack shows 225/45R17's as being in stock and not on close-out. Did you try another size? I don't remember what the alternative to your 18" tires are, but I had to move from 205/50R17s to 225/45R17's because they don't come in the 205's...

Doesn't say anything about being on clearance... http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....Z1SS&tab=Sizes

With a 380 treadwear rating, I expect to get at least 30k out of them comparted to the 21k I got from the Contis. The majority of my driving is commuting to work / school, so for me it's a perfect fit.

When I do start taking this car to the track, it will be when I can affort a dedicated set of track wheels and tires.
