Rounding off the track-focused modifications is an optional and very tall rear spoiler. It was standard equipment back when the supercharged Cobalt SS was on the market, but 70 percent of buyers selected the no-cost delete option, pushing Chevy to make it an option this time around. I'd skip that check box for the sake of rear visibility, but here's some ammunition for the pro-spoiler crowd: at 70 mph, it generates 23 pounds of downforce. At 120 mph, that rises to 68.7 pounds, and at the top speed of 155 mph the number is 115 pounds. Lose the wing, though, and top speed rises to a drag-limited 160 mph

Edit: That's on a stock cobalt ss/tc, if it's drag limited to 160mph.. with a tune and a few mods.. that could be a fair amount higher....

It is limited at 155 mph. There is a speed limiter programmed into the ECM at 155 mph. I saw when I was tuning my car. Raised mine to 199 even though I cannot go that fast. Even though the magazines claim 160 mph it cannot get there because of the limiter.

Ive seen 240 km/h (149MPH) with lots of room to spare. I'm sure a high-rise car can go faster than 155MPH, unless there is a limiter there.

Note: I have a high-rise.

It's electronically limited to 155 mph (249 kph) while stock, the way it is from the factory. This limiter is regardless of spoiler selection. From what I understand, with this limiter removed, the car will go faster than 160 mph - but you'll have to ask one of the smarter guys for confirmation on that.

SS-SC = 158 mph
SS-TC = 155 mph
2.4 = 140 mph

All of which can be eliminated with tunes.

I must ask the question, where are you guys driving to even get up to speeds to test those limits?

I sure hope it is a track and not public roads....but I have a feeling you guys are going to be telling me the latter...

My limiter is definitely removed and I can tell you that it will go much faster then 160 depending on the level of mods someone has and if you have enough straight road to play with.....

I was talking about stock only... I'm not sure how fast a stock car will go with no limiter.

The last "what's the top speed" thread resulted in massive argument... now when someone asks I just tell them the limiter and be gone.

Well thats an appropriate response....I am all for knowing and testing the limits of our cars if done in a safe fashion, but when I see people posting things like,

"i have a low profile spoiler and i have gone 162mph... its faaaaast!"

I think to myself, if this guy is doing that on public roads, what is he trying to prove? That is just idiotic and irresponsible to do if that is the case. Being that he has not specified where this speed took place, I will not judge in hoping that it was done at a track or something of that nature.

If you have the need for speed, go to the dragstrip....if you want to have an adrenaline rush, go to the dozens of road courses throughout the US....if you really want to go crazy, save some cash, go to the Bonneville Salt flats or the Autobahn in Germany.

That is all I wanted to say....to get back on topic, the top speed of our cars can be played around with by using calculator like this one....

http://enormouslysideways.net/calc.html

Play around with the variables and have some fun with it. Interesting to see the impact some very minor changes can have.

I agree with you completely man, and there's really no valid argument to refute you. But I know there's going to be a few owners who think their cars are invincible try to justify going 160 mph on public roads, so I'll go grab some popcorn.

Stock Cobalt SS/TC, if you tune and increase the RPM's... I'm sure you could go a fair amount faster

I have a tune and ful bolt ons and raised redline, I know it can pass 160 no problem but I don't have rpd so I would be cruisin at high speeds and I wouldnt know how fast I would be going unless a cop cought me lol, but I bet 170+

I swear our speedometers run slow on these things I can get only 98 mph in thrd at the rev limiter (6300), and I too calculated that the car should be doing 103.

Drag.....

Don't forget those are gear ratio's... so even if you had 500hp+

With stock gear's, stock rpm limiter, stock tire size.... it will just get you up to speed faster....

These are numbers confirmed by GM test engineers!!! I would not trust one thing you read in the car mags...How ever (road and track mag) did recall an earlier top speed figure on the SS\TC , see at the bottom....

The SS\SC had a top speed of 145 with low rise wing, 140 with high rise wing... The SS\TC has a drag limited top speed of 150 with the low rise wing... the high rise SS\TC has a top speed of 142 due to the drag caused by the big Ass wing... FACT: The TC does NOT HAVE A GOVERNED top speed...... With a stock SS\TC 6250 rpm redline:
1st gr: 35-37 mph ...
2nd gr: 62-65 mph,....
3rd gr: 97-102 mph,.......
4th gr: 137-141mph
5th gr: 145-150mph for the Coupe.. Lower speed is for the high wing models and the higher speed is for low wing models....

I've rasied my redline to 7k in every gear.... with 295 whp: new speeds per gear for me are :
1st gr: 39 mph,....
2nd gr: 72mph,......
3rd gr: 109 mph,......
4th gr: 145mph,...
5th gr is supposedly near 160mph.....
My car hits a brick wall above 149 mph and can't seem to go much faster at all despite nearly 300whp...

Road and Track October 2008 has a drag limited top speed of 160 for the SS\TC but they've since revamped that claim down to 150. The SS\SC--TC cars have a bad coefficient of drag....

I actually have done some of the testing on these cars back home in Detroit and in the Arizona Desert...

Love the chart

But it's really in accurate for 5th gr above 5500 rpm...

I'd love to see a bone stock SS\TC go over 63-64 mph in second gear and 104 mph in third.. The five Ss\TC's I tested for GM hit 97-100 mph in third gear at 6250 rpm..... You'd need 7000 rpm to hit 70 mph in 2nd gear.. same rpm in third will take you to 110 mph with 295 whp or better at 6800 rpm.. I've seen the 110 in third done by FF_ace, he could have gone faster but was limited by ultimate hp\aerodynamics, etc..

My 2006 GTO 6-spd had over 550whp nicely modded........ Stock and governed at 158 in fifth gear was fine...but with the 550 whp and 3800 lbs., sixth gear was a fuel economy gear and as such was really tall... Sixth gear in fact has a hypothetical top speed of 211 mph in the 6- spd 2006 GTO... but I would have needed another 200 whp to get near that number and about 20 miles of straight flat road and no wind,, Ha, Ha... my top end with 550 whp was about 187 mph...radar verified on GM proving grounds in Az. A stock one ungoverned will do 174mph...

Those numbers are calculated using the stock tire size. 3.82 FD and the F35 trans ratios those numbers are what it should see, and I have done calculations for other cars with that same calculator and those results came out perfectly accurate. I seems like the speedometers run a little slow on these cars. If you redline 2nd it will be right at 69 mph if you let off and wait a second for the speedometer to catch up. I know because I accidently missed third the other day and almost put it in 5th.

Ask anyone who has tuned a turbo Cobalt and they will pleasantly disagree with you.

You guys need to read the previous posts. I posted the fact that it is electronically limited to 155 mph about 8 posts ago.
