What is this clunk after shutting the car off?

I recently noticed after shutting the car off by the time I make it out and I'm walking away from the car I can hear a clunk coming from the engine bay. Sounds like something coming from the transmission. BTW just hit 1500 miles today.

on my older cars if there was a noise after i shut it off the timing was off... I dont know about newer cars and timing too much so idk but thats my bet. trannies tend not to have problems when the car is off...

when you get back in is it in neutral? cuz if it is the tranny it could be kicking it outta gear

I wonder why it would be kicking it out of gear if thats the case? Car runs fine but the trans seems to make more noise when shifting than I've noticed in any other car.

MY car does the same thing but I think it is actually the automatic headlights. Sounds crazy but when I pull into my carport the clunk seems to happen as the automatic headlights turn off.

its because the car is cooling off at a fast rate from being highly heated. Its just the metal contracting, noting to worry about, my car does the samething and it gets really bad when i stress it out.

at least this is what I think your talking about. I would have to hear how bad it is exactly to tell you whats wrong

Well it must be the throttle plate springing back, cause it its about 7 seconds after shutting the car off. Pretty loud IMO, this car has the most clicks, ticks and clunks of any car I've owned.....

I am way more of a science geek/nerd than a car guy.... and what the above person just stated is possible, but usually heard repeatedly. Is this just one big "CLUNK/CLINK" sound lawlz... or is it several... like machine gunning off

I mean.,. we all hear the engines on MOST every car crackle and "tink" a bit after we pull them into the garage and shut them off. It is the metal contracting.... usually coming from your exhaust tailpipe.

I ask because if its just one solid and loud clink....then its not the metal of your car contracting as it cools down... it would be something else...

Have you ever owned a Direct-Injected vehicle before?

Go out and spank a V-8.. you will forget all about the lil noises the Cobalt makes my friend

Nah it's one big cluck, actually scared me the first time cause I was walking away from the car and when I heard it I thought I may have left the park brake off and it was rolling away....I think originaladrian has it right since it's an electronic throttle body. Woodward cruise this evening

well in that case, I dont know what to tell you. Are you remembering to keep the car running a little after a drive to cool the turbo?

although its extra protection, i dont belive there is a need to let the oil run through the turbo and let ur car sit. at least on a mostly stock TC.

Yeah I'll usually let it cool down for a minute or so, I just hit 1500 miles so I haven't had a chance to open it up yet much. Thanks bro

Well just keep breaking it in keep it under 60mph for the first 6000 miles to be on the safe side and see how it is later, if the problem gets worse, you should take it in.

^^^^i know that sounds ridiculuos (6000 miles!) lol but thats what i did when i first bought he balt and Im going on three years with my car and not one single problem so far

I wasn't used to the clutch and stalled it at the first stop light.

i learned to drive stick in my SS/SC, and from what i've heard the TC's clutch is more forgiving.

this car has some crazies.
