When does your turbo start to build pressure?

Hello all, a couple of months ago I replaced the turbo in my car because it went out. When I put the new turbo in I made sure everything was set just how the old one was. With my old turbo I didn't ever get boost unless I had the pedal about 3/4 the way to the floor, then it would spool up. With my new turbo, it will build boost in 2nd gear with only about 1/8 throttle up to about 5 psi. In 3rd it will spike up to around 12 psi then drop to around 6 before I shift with only about 1/8 throttle again. I'm not sure if this is because my old turbo was so warn out it didn't build boost unless the throttle was open almost all the way, or if I don't have the new turbo calibrated right.

turbos build boost as soon as you start accelerating. Do you mean to ask "When does the car read boost pressure?" at 100% throttle, should be around 1800rpms for a stock setup.

And based on what your saying, maybe the wastegate needs to be adjusted but as long as your fuel trims and AFR are fine, I dont see how starting to build boost alittle earlier is hurting anything?

P.S.- If the turbo is not a wear part like a clutch or brake pads. It either works 100% or it doesnt. No such thing as the turbo wearing out. Only breaking. My guess is maybe you had a slight boost leak with the old turbo which prevented boost building at lower throttle response. Swapping the turbo you must have fixed a boost leak.

It depends on engine load. If you're driving 20mph in third, it doesn't take much to build boost even with low pedal input.

I think I'm the person that sold the turbo to you. I'm glad to see your car is back on the road.

As soon as I hit the gas it starts building pressure, now full boost is somewhere in the 4600 rpm range

I'm guessing my old turbo must have had a boost leak, so I'm just not used to it, thanks for the replies.
