Winter tune????
Hi all,
I've read some posts of people getting a winter tune. How does it work exactly? Some people, as far as I've read, are even using 89 or 91 gas for the winter.
What is the winter tune exactly? What does it do? I live in NY, is it something I should worry and get my car retuned for the winter?
Thank you
Christian

Usually a winter tune is more conservative. It will run richer, or at least correct the AFR for the cold weather, and also the timing will be reduced a bit to compensate for the crappy gas and more cylinder pressure due to the more dense charged air from the cold temps. When I used to drive my car in the winter I would just not get on it at all...but our winters are rough and really cold.

Unless your car is tuned ***** to the wall it will be fine. The lnf engine management will monitor the afr, kr, boost ect and adjust accordingly. If your car is tuned all the way to the edge of knock then you may want to pull a degree so the car is always retarding the timing due to the winter fuel

^^^ Exactly what he said.. But also along the line of fuel trims as well..When air is cooler and denser the trims will skew do to this. So in order to be safe you will need to be tuned for the cooler temps.
And yes worry about it. Hopfully your tuner doesnt charge you for revisions or hopefully he or she is cheap!

If you store your car you will be fine. The main reason for retuning for winter is to keep your car from detonation or to over do it. Decrease timing, more fuel, and ect. In winter we get fuel that has ethanol bleand so it needs to be tuned for it. We also get fuel with other fuel adderes to help it not Gel up or freeze. Ethanol also creates a condensation gather which causes most issues in winter...

Im not starting a fight... Nor a argument. I understand your point, but your customer asked a question and in regards to a winter tune. Your blunt statement of youll be fine isnt enough for him. Which is why i said what i said. And you should know that winter gas and a winter tune is a must since your a tuner .. Even if its for a check up!!
His needs? lol.. Christian is welcome to drive out anytime and we will look at the car but it is nowhere near aggressive to where it constantly needs fine tuning to be safe.. And the fuel trims are there for a reason, you should know this and what they do since you are a tuner
