Z54 turbo failure 5 months old!!!!

Was out driving the car a couple days ago and noticed a cloud of smoke behind me when going into boost. Pulled the upper charge pipe and we have a lot of oil inside the intercooler piping.

Called zzp yesterday and they told me it sounds like a crankcase pressure issue. Also to send picture of where the oil is coming from and check for shaft play.

Took some pictures today and removed the intake off the turbo only to find about a .25 to .50'' of in and out movement on the turbo shaft.

I think its safe to say this turbo is done!

Purchase date was 8/10/17. Lasted less than 6 months!!

Sending a email with pictures to zzp right now. Will let you guys know how it turns out. Should have a 2 year warranty according to zzps website.

Aw snap. Hopefully they do you right. Be prepared for a fight. Looks like ZZP is going to eat crow with this crappy turbo.

ZZP emailed and said to send it back. Already pulled it and shipped it FedEx. Luckily it was my day off and they responded quick

eh, dont really know if its a "real issue"

ZZP has probably sold quite a bit of these budget ZFR turbos and the only people who have issues complain on the internet(not saying thats a bad thing, but hard to get useful data)

This.

Hopefully I'll have time to yank mine out this weekend, so short on time lately it's rediculous.

ZZP told me that they would honor the warranty 5 days ago and they have already sent it back rebuilt. Thanks a lot to Ryan from ZZP for making this as easy as possible!!

That's good. Finally had time to send mine. If you don't mind me asking, roughly how many miles did you have on it before it blew?

So, just to give some info for the failures.

ZZP had told me they had issues with the BPV spring being too stiff, causing issues with fluttering and surge.. They are busy now saying this....so which is it, or are either of the statements true?

I wonder if he means caking on the turbo shaft not sludge. Also thats crazy to think they claim tampering, the **** you tamper with a center section on a turbo you just bought unless you're a competitor and then why in the hell would you think of warrantying it after.

by tampering they likely mean adjusting the wastegate or changing the bypass valve.

So if I read that correctly they will either give you your money back or they will rebuild the core for 750$? How does that make sense? So get a refund and buy a new one?

I think that's what they offered them, but I'm not sure as I'm not the person from the pic. I was just going more with the fact they told me they had some issues with the bpv causing surge, but they're telling people who ask about the failures that they were all user caused issues.

Ive had a forge in my 6758 for the last 10k. Lots of people run them in zfrs with no issues.
