Theres a bunch of threads that talk about intakes man. They all have their little quirks which has caused alot of ppl to not purchase an intake. The LNF MAF is very sensitive and requires some finr tuning if you do get an intake.

That being said, I myself have an AEM intake. I didnt have the major problems that other AEM owners were having like surging. I did however take the AEM silicone elbow off and replaced it with the stock elbow because I think it was intermitently chocking the turbo. I have been in contact with them constantly and there is a revision in the works and should be receiving one as soon as they are available directly from AEM. I will report on my findings then.

Really now? Were talking about the AEM intake right? Here is the lates e-mail from the tech I have been dealing with. It specifically states that they have added a venturi to smooth the airflow over the MAF and are currently working on the surging issue at cold start:

Michael,

Some updates from R & D:

The updated pipes should cover all of the model years, a venturi was added . ETA for new pipes will follow.

There was no problem on the silicone elbow, it was more on the temporary weird surging sound during cold starts that was noticed.

Here’s the results from R & D:

We just had a Cobalt SS with the same issue. The AEM system allows much more air flow than stock so the compressor goes into surge during a point in start up when the recirculation valve is open (about 30 seconds) and causes the cyclic surge sound. The fact is that the OE elbow is restrictive in flow and keeps the TC out of surge at high idle when the recirculation valve opens. One of the things that the AEM system does is allow more flow, thus more power in the case of the turbocharged engine. We do realize that the noise is annoying are planning to do some experimenting to fully open the recirculation valve at cold start to eliminate the surge, we will keep you posted.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Thank you,

Joji Luz

Well, there you go. That e-mail is straight from AEM tech. Wasnt it you that said they had put a venturi on the intake? Thats a revision, no?

It's a revision but doesn't solve the problem

they said their elbow is not the issue

but they tested and proved stock elbow = no surging

and the only way to stop surging is to restrict airflow which they aren't gonna do

here's a graph comparing the two elbows

Well, I just sent the AEM tech that Ive been talking to an e-mail regarding AEM's plans on the intake. If their plans changed about the revision, I dont know about it. He offered me a full refund before so if the revision was cancelled I will be asking for my money back, throwing the stock box back on and purchasing the vararam intake when it comes out if its any good.

Well thats how Im running the intake now. With the stock coupler. So, did they tell you flat out, no revision then?

I'm gonna hack up the elbow and make it more of a solid piece and see if it helps

I bought a used AEM intake for 180 and I have toyed with it from time to time. The latest experiment was using the aem intake with th stock elbow. It flowed much better than the stock intake. Infact it flowed so well that I blew my stock charge piping off of the mounts and caused a Check Engine light about the intake system. My intake is all scrached and the mount is broken and it was cheap so if i eventualy throw it out I will not mind but I would love for it to work better.
