Aftermarket RPD
Aftermarket RPD
I have an 08 TC, and myself, like many others are jealous of the RPD feature. I'm not a big fan on the styling, but do like the idea of all the features. My question is "What are some aftermarket devices/gauges that serve some/all/more of the same features as the GM RPD does?".
I know that the intercepetor has some of the same functions, but just wanting to see any other options out there. If mods wont allow link posting, feel free to PM me link, or just name the company in the forum.
Lastly, if there is already a similar thread on this, post it as well. The search button is not being very useful right now.

I'm almost positive the Dashhawk was going to support the SS/TC, might try this:
If you vehicle is not listed in the supported vehicles page, all is not lost! There are many vehicles being added/tested every day and it is hard to capture them all and keep them up to date, so a good way to see if your car has a CAN bus is the following:
1. OBDIILocate the OBDII connector. It is under the dash on the driver’s side of the vehicle, often either under the steering wheel or tucked up next to the driver’s side kick panel.
2. Look carefully at the plug with a flash light or other bright light source. If pins 6 and 14 have metal pins in them (i.e. are “populated”) then the vehicle has a CAN bus and DashHawk will most likely work with this vehicle.

The dashhawk is compatible with the lnf, it works on the solstice gxp and sky redline. All it currently needs now is some vin numbers to be entered into it so it can recognize the car, but with support being almost dead from msd you'll really have to bug them.
Now as for a rpd replacement, i suggest the dashdaq, it does it all. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyHS4s1MZxs

i cant belive gm isn't going to offer a harness to put the factory rpd into the 2008 vehicles and maybe even make it work with the gxp and red line.... im not posotive but im pretty sure i read about someone making harnesses for them on this forum...
dam dude that bitch is pretty cool... but on the cobalt would you just get the stock boost gage? or go a head and get the RPD and just replace it? what's easier
oh wait. does it plug into the adapter?
looks like the only thing it doesn't do is detect radar lol..

There was also talk to trying to do home-made adaptations to the unit to make it work across the board but nothing ever came of it.
The 09 has a different operating system that does not allow this item to be compatible with other models...regardless of how you 'rig' it.
Also, keep in mind that the RPD display does not do any sort of data logging like aftermarket "RPDs"... so the system is not as good as an aftermarket system anyways...it just looks really neat. Just go with a DashDAQ...for $550 you get a system that outperforms the factory option with data logging..... you really can't go wrong there...
Also, I have been able to compare the dashhawk (on a speed 3) with the GM RPD display....the dashhawk does far more than the RPD display, but it does have a smaller display. Just something to keep in mind...
PS. For those of you that have an 09 keep this in mind... the RPD display is not a 'plug and play' item. It requires an advanced (?) wiring harness that couples it directly into the ecm. I believe that the ecm also has to be 'flashed' to recognize it (tech 2?)... hence this item has not been seen outside of being a factory option and is porbably not available outside of the factory...

Yeh, the rumor was you could buy the rpd, then buy the harness, then have it installed. Total cost of this was to be near 1000 bucks. But since its different OS, the GM RPD is supposedly not compatible. But as Nakaiya says, GM RPD has no data logging, which IMO is a definite must to tuners. I have read that these aftermarket device are not "completely" accurate, but are fairly close. If that is taken into consideration, it seems fairly useful. Plus Dashdaq offers upgradable GPS as well. So even if the GM RPD was compatible, it wouldn't be worth the cost. Total cost of a dashdaq with GPS, with GM parameters, would only total like 800 dollars. Dashdaq>GM RPD. But if you're looking for something that is not "AS" tricked out as a dashdaq, take Reign's advice, get a dashhawk, it is loads cheaper.
It plugs into the obd2 port, as for the radar bit... there was some talk on the dashdaq forums about interfacing the valentine 1 with the dashdaq, no sure if anything came out of that.
**** a thousand dollars for a display. really... god dam. screw that...
i don't like the GM one but holy **** it's only 250 not a thousand...
does the GM RPD have tire pressure sensor readings? and does the dashdaq?
it seems like i remember seeing that on the GM one.
of course i won't have to pay to get it put in. my mechanic will do it. or my dad. who ever wants to lol

uh. like. so it does detect radar? I'm confused. and does anyone have this on a Cobalt SS/TC cuz i like it but im def not gonna spend a grand on it and have to send it back.
watched some videos of it on youtube. it looks pretty cool. i want it. lol
god that sucks. i think that's just so cool. lol... plus it changes with the weather. and i'd just like to know if i had a flat! lol

No its not a radar detector, there was simply talk about displaying the output of the valentine1 on the dashdaq some time ago, it seemed possible since all the dashdaq team needed was the data stream info from the valentine1, but nothing came out of this afaik.
It should work on the cobalt ss/tc since they actually used that as a test car to get all the info from the lnf ecm, and that video i posted above is from a solstice gxp.
Cheapest i found is $535 for one, not sure where you saw one for a grand.

Wonder what's mechanically different between the '08/'09 cars....'cuase it can't be that hard to plug in an '09 PCM assuming all of the connections are the same. Then, the harness and the RPD should work....right?
Oh...and the main wiring harness is different between the two models...you need an 09 wiring harness for the rpd...

so if i have an 09 it'll work. and if you have an 08 you gotta get the harness?
i think i'll get one after i get my mods put on and a tune. looks like it'd be a good idea to get something like that after a toon and stuff.
the dashdaq is pretty cool. i'm sure the guys at sound solutions can get me one and they usually install it for free and give a life time warranty on installations. word.

The dashdaq doesn't need any harness, it plugs into the obd2 port, its the gm rpd that needs one.
Even from the manufacturer the dashdaq is $550, if you do some searching you'll find it a bit cheaper.
