Question Air intake questions

Hi everyone. I'm thinking about switching my Dejon Sri intake with a spectra air filter out with either a used K&N Typhon SRI or buying a used stock airbox with a K&N drop in filter and buy a ZZP intake tube for it.

What's best for not skewing the MAF and still giving good gains?

I should probably note that I now longer have the pieces to the stock intake, including the piece that ran down below the original airbox.

If the two options were the same price, K&N typhone Sri vs stock airbox with upgrades, what would you take? Or should I just put my money somewhere else and just stick with the Dejon intake with the spectra filter?

Thanks for any tips or advice.

I'm stock and use the K&N SRI.
I love the improvement, despite the fact that I'm not even tuned. I don't see the point in dropping $300 for a tune with ONLY an intake.

The improvment your getting is sound.

Your MAF readings are FUBAR’d with an aftermarket intake and no Tune. The ECM is just compensating for the turbulence at your MAF sensor. And probably pulling timing and fuel.

Oh, if you have a 06 Pursuit - your Tune is less than $300. At least it would be if you were around me. You’ll gain about 8-10 HP and TQ at the wheels. Best Bang for the $$ by far is a Tune.

Unless you're tuned no intake will give you any performance difference as our ECU has a learn down feature. It'll give you 260 horse and no more, no matter what you do to it if you're on a stock tune. A tune removes that.

Conventional wisdom is that the the K+N messes with your trims the least and probably sounds the best.

Again, unless you're tuned the only benefit will be the sound.

I thought a tune pushes out more than that. I think someone at Trifecta quote me 10-30 HP.

So the 7HP gain charts on the K&N site are incorrect?

Actually, it is 10-20 HP at the wheels.

I always like to quote the lower number, so as to not disappoint customers. It will also depend on engine mods.
With the L61, it is usually at the lower end of the power estimate, because of the lack of VVT and other upgrades that the LAP received.

If you’re 2.4 then it will be closer to the higher number.

That 7 HP gain on the K&N site is probably at the crank and not at the wheels. Because of torque management, you can never exceed the factory TQ spec without a Tune.

Nope, I'm on the L61 bandwagon, so I guess I'd be closer to 10.

Oh, I see! I've never had that explained to me before, thank you.

My car is already tuned and is currently using the Dejon SRI with a Spectra filter. I just am wondering if its worth the money to upgrade it back to stock modified or K&N typhon setup. Since I'm already tuned do I need to worry about the MAF getting some crazy turbulence with the dejon intake?

If you are tuned you will see the gain they quote. If you are stock the ECU will learn down and you'll gain nothing.

There is no improvement with an intake except in sound. Ur getting no more power cause ur ecu just adjusts itself back to stock power. And u sound like uv never been in a tuned Balt, even with just an intake and tune ud ve singing a different tune ( pune intended) lol if u would know what they are like tuned

No I haven't, because I don't know anyone with a tuned Balt.

I can imagine tunes for the SC/TCs are well worth the money, because there's already potential waiting to be unlocked by changing their settings. Plus, those engines already come with significantly more power than the 2.2s (a mere 145HP)

10 HP at the wheels for $250 is the best bang for your buck you can get IMHO.

Best power gains are on an LNF for sure. But he has a L61.

Yup... so it'd be from 145 to... 155?

Again, that 145 is at the crank. Probably 130ish at the wheels stock. So about 142 hp at the wheels with Trifecta. Same torque increase also.
Intake and exhaust mods will increase power a bit more because the Tune will take full advantage of them.
Better throttle response too.

And how much for a 2.2 tune?

I still swear I've gotten somewhat of a response gain with the intake.

$250 or less for a 2.2 Tune. I think GM uses Tq learn down for all their ECMs. Not just the LNF.
