Build list/how-to/tips
So I decided that it was a good idea to blow up my engine at the track this past Sunday (and before anybody asks...no it didn't get any good runs in. 13.7 @111mph was my best run...and that was as my car was dissinigrating. track temps at 108, elevation at like 5800...yadda yadda)
Back on topic. Last half of the track I feel my engine slowly just lose power.I get to build my engine now
My two options are this
Option A:
Buy new Wiseco pistons, ZZP rods, new rod and main bearings, ZZP valve spring kit, ARP headstuds, gaskets, plugs, fluids. I would also be buying a new Aeroforce gauge, ZZP clutch rod with new master cylinder, as well as either a 5th Injector Kit or a Meth Injection kit. This option comes to like 2500 bucks. When going with this option, I will be attempting to do the build myself with the help of a few friends who are certified mechanics.
Pros to this option-great learning experience doing it myself, zero or very little labor costs, cheaper than Option B (wait for it), upgraded valve springs, upgraded fueling, scan gauge.
Cons of this option- If cylinder walls are too bad, i will need to resleeve which will bump up costs considerably...thus pushing me to Option B. Also some crucial parts will be "un-forged" so they could potentially fail
Option B:
ZZP Forged Shortblock with Wiseco pistons, ZZP rods, ZZP Neutral Balance shafts, new GM Flywheel, ATI SFI Turbo Balancer.
Pros of this option: Everything will be built and highly unlikely to break at my wanted power levels (425hp). Pretty much drop in the new engine as it is ready to go.
Cons of this option: Expensive ($4000), no other extra parts (upgraded valve springs, gauge, fueling, clutch rod), longer wait time.
So those are my options although i much rather prefer Option A purely due to costs and the learning part.
All said parts would be purchased from ZZP as they offer the best deals.
That being said,
Does anybody know of any threads or websites that give basic rebuild info for engines..or even as specific as Ecotecs? I know I could probably get a big expensive build book but im going to try the free alternative first lol
Maybe since I am buying the parts from ZZP they could chime in and offer me up some tips or build sheets, etc.
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks

i say just build it go option B it leaves u room to progress further if u desire and uk ur engine will be safe if u dont...if u dont do it ull end up wondering wut if
depends if your block needs honed or bored, and a clean up then the short block is almost worth it i just paid a lot to get my block machined for my trans, just keep that in mind. The zzp one might need a cleanup hone, unless they do that for you.
my advice is do it the way you are eventually going to want it to be the first time!

What exactly busted in your engine? Rods, Pistons?????
425HP doesn't seem like it should bust an engine...that sucks.
First the Tranny, then the Engine, after your done with the build you should have a monster.
Good luck....and go with Option 2 and crank up the juice on that turbo kit of yours.

i'm saving up little by little to do a build myself and just accumulate parts over time. but my plan is to go zzp girdled block. as previously stated, just do it right the first time. if u wanted the knowledge and experience u could always have zzp send u everything separate and then put it together urselves...
Most likely a ringland on piston 4 probably. I would go with opt. 2. I'm getting a block and having it sent to ZZP. I'm doing a 2.1 stroker
I want 600whp and to do it safely and correctly is let the pros do it. They specialize in these cars. I would recommend you to get a ZZP block don't matter if you want to have redic power it's the safest bet. If you plan on doing it yourself and don't got much knowledge with these cars. ZZP is the way
Here you go
let the force be with you
GMTunerSource.com - ECOtec Build Book - Sport Compact Build Book
I have one specific for the LSJ but i couldn't find one for the LNF motor

Step 1. Understand why and how you nuked the engine.
In Option A, you still need to pay a machine shop to hone the cylinder walls, regardless of any possible wall damage. Want to cheap out and skip? Prepare to go back in when the new rings don't seat.

Oh whoops I thought I mentioned what had happened. Well as it sits, the car runs. But it's rough. It sounds like a wrx. I pulled the plugs and plug 2 was coated in oil. Did a compression test and cylinder 2 and it was at 40psi. Oil smoke comes out of the exhaust. My guess is a ring/ringland issue but regardless Im going to build it all

Thanks for that link. That's exactly what I was looking for. Just some basic info on how to rebuild so I can decide if I want to do it myself or not.
