Catch Can Air Flow!

My piece of junk $20 catch can I got off ebay isn't doing squat, so I decided to install a Husky air compressor filter. It has an 'in' port and an 'out' port, so I'm wondering what the direction of the air flow is between the valve cover and the turbo (the line that the catch can replaces). Should the hose from the turbo be connected to the 'in' port or is it the hose coming from the valve cover?

Help is appreciated!

ugh be cautious. The hose from the inlet air tube is the fresh air in side does not need a catch can.

The hose from the vc to the turbo is the dirty side, screw with that with caution as you risk making a mess of your car. The pcv requires certain levels of vacuum and if you plumb an ebay catch can in there and the hose sizing is wrong and you then let it run to the atmosphere , then potentially bad things may happen.

We will have a solution available next week with any luck, but it wont be a 29.99 fix for sure.

The current solution uses the hose on the back of the valve cover going into the can, and then a hose going back out of the can that goes back and connects back to the side of the turbo. You're basically putting it inline instead of the original valve cover hose going directly from the head to the turbo.

As far as your earlier question about the airflow on the inside of a catch can, this was the best illustration out there that I could find. It's best to have the can baffled in such a way that it can't pass straight through the can, and must pass through the material before leaving the can.

The air compressor filter definitely cycles the air through 'baffling' (the filter part) so I'm hoping it should work.

I just want to make sure I put the correct lines to the 'input' and 'output' of the 'catch can' (air compressor filter)

So just to verify, the direction of the air flow through that line goes from the VC to tehe Turbo flows from the VC to the turbo and not the other way around?

Someone out there has to know this. For the hose that goes from the valve cover to the turbo that the catch can replaces, is the air flowing from VC to turbo or from turbo to VC?

Well since the one that goes from intake to valve cover has the check valve, I'd assume that that one is the fresh air intake, so the turbo to valve cover would be the vent, so airflow would go from valve cover to turbo

But would be easy enough to check, Pull the hose off and see which one blows air. Plus the one that goes to the turbo comes out just before the compressor, so it would be sucking air out of the hose

Oooh... I understand what you're asking now.

It goes from the intake, through the PCV/check valve, into the VC, through the crankcase, out the VC, through the catch can (if there is one), and back to the turbo for the engine to ingest.

If you look at the stock intake, it's actually got a small "ram air" kind of scoop pointing into the airflow to help push fresh air into the system.

How much oil does it hold? Cause I'm warning u now if it doesn't have some kinda resiover for oil, and it's just a filter like thing it will clog and ur motor will be pushing oil out every gasket it can, that's what happened on my dsm when I didn't realize the previous owner had a filter on the line

It does have a resovoir for oil. See the link below.

1/4 in. Air Compressor Filter-HDA70403AV at The Home Depot

Another thing I found out last night when I installed it was that contrary to what was said earlier in this thread, the flow was from the turbo to the VC. I pulled the line coming from the VC and there was definitely a vacuum coming from it. Just a heads up if anyone else needs to know.

That thing has no reservoir, and the filter media is too small, along with the ports being too small. You're not doing yourself any favors here.

Let me give you an idea how much oil gets puked out when the engine is run hard. This is after 2 days of track, using a proper air/oil separator.

That's a 20 oz Vitamin Water bottle. Like John said, good luck...

I have the larger husky air compressor filter from home depot on mine, it never seems to catch that much oil even though it has the metal mesh that the air has to pass through. Although I did manage to fill it in one night when I bypassed the bpv solenoid...still has me baffled as to what happened to get the engine to burp up that much oil from changing bpv actuation

Send me a PM as well, I'd like to see what you have. I have the K&N SRI. I'd prefer to get one that goes between the turbo and VC though.
