Clutch Slip
Hey guys,
I know this makes me sound stupid, but I have to ask in order to learn. How can you tell whether or not a clutch is slipping? What are the signs?
Thanks
Jake

ya i'd compare the smell to a welding shop coated in peanut butter. Also you might notice your rpm's on your tach jumping up or not going up proportionaly to the speed of your car. i remember losing my first clutch in my Eagle Talon TSI. It sucked :/ but that's what happens when ya buy a used and abused car.

Mine slips a lot at times, never smells tho. You will hear the car get loud like it wants to go, revs will rise and the car doesnt pick up speed at all. It's very noticeable when it happens IMO.

Just noticed his sig says stock, there should be NO clutch slip at stock levels. Even a tune only car should not see slip. We didnt start seeing slip on the dyno til about 360wtq. Even then, its only 4th and 5th gear down very low at WOT that it would happen.

The way he said to check for slippage is 100% accurate for a stock car.
I will say this: I had the Trifecta tune and cat-less CIA downpipe this summer and I could still floor it in 5th and not slip. As the weather got colder, and I got my CIA short ram intake, along with the modified tune from Vince, I can instantly make my clutch slip in 5th. I did it 2 times, first time was accidentally and I didn't know what happened, 2nd time was to confirm that I could now get the clutch to slip. Hasn't happened since then, as I now know it will happen. If you ask Vince, even with his basic tune, he will tell you not to floor it in 5th gear, especially in the colder weather.

I have a log thast shows mine slipping in thirs the RPMs rise quickly (speed stays about the same) and drop back down a second later then go back up. It is starting to annoy me and I am turning down my DALs from 3K to 4500 to help with the slipping.

So I go WOT in fifth gear pretty often. I drive the freeway everyday. I didn't know it was bad for the clutch. I should be shifting to 4th or 3rd instead of letting boost build in fifth? Wow, I'm an idiot.... lol

its a valid check, but its unnecessary abuse... that is like saying getting punched in the mouth is a great way to test the durability of your teeth

That's only about half true... Yes, it is abusive to do, but if you don't do it under controlled circumstances, how would you know if it will slip when you need the power? No one is saying to make a dozen full throttle passes at low RPM's in 5th gear. But there is no other way to check to see if the clutch will slip. We all know the durability of our teeth from 20+ years of using them, we don't know about our clutches.

Agree...I've been around since the stone age and that's always been the way to diagonose a worn clutch...how else can you check? Take it apart? lol...
