Engine Sputter

Hey, Guys. I was just wondering if anyone else was having a similar problem... My 2009 SS/TC 2.0LNF has been running a little rough lately. When accelerating, it wants to sputter and doesn't seem to have full power. I checked fuel pressure and coils and found both were fine. Then, I changed the plugs and the problem persisted. I started pulling a "throttlebody idle position not learned code" (I can't remember the specific code) so I pulled off the throttlebody and cleaned it. (It wasn't very dirty at all but after the pain of getting it off, I had to clean it). When I put it back on, the car seemed to run better for a few days before slumping back into it's powerless state. This leads me to believe it's the throttlebody. Any ideas??

Also... When I kill the engine, there's a clicking noise that sounds EXACTLY like the butterfly-valve in the throttle body opening and closing a few times. Anyone else experience that? Is it normal or is that another indicator that my throttlebody is bad? Any help is appreciated, Guys.

Mods: K&N Intake
NOS 50 Wet shot just before the throttlebody AFTER the MAF sensor.

The clicking is definitely the butterfly and is definitely normal.

As for diagnosis, I'm not much help. A log of throttle position and engine load might be helpful using obd2 software.

That puts my mind at ease knowing that's normal! As for the logs, it's a sad situation. I don't have any OBD2 software or hardware to run any logs nor am I close to any hp tuners. I don't even have an RPD)';

get on ebay and search ELM327. it's a obd2 reader that connects to your phone via bluetooth, and you can download the TORQUE app for a few bucks, it can display about anything we can see in an RPD, and you can log, time, and do all sorts of **** with it too. total cost is probably 12 bucks.

do u have a powell oil separator? if not, pull the brake booster line from the manifold, get a borescope in there and take a look at the valves. u may need to walnut blast them clean.

Not familiar with a Powell oil separator so if it isn't stock, I probably don't have one. What's it's function?

its like a catch can but actually works on this car since catch cans don't. it removes the blowby oil from the intake system and drains it back into the pan, keeping ur valves clean, without it ur valves get gunked up within 50k kms sometimes less and car starts acting like u describe. gotta take off intake manifold and blast them with walnut media.

I'll look into getting everything tomorrow. Anything I should know before cleanjng? Or is ut really just manifold removal and spray?

Well, my throttlebody wasn't very dirty at all. I wonder what the valves will look like. What's the name of the thread with that pic?

That same thread has the pictures.

The PCV system in this car is setup such that much of the gas goes straight from the head to the intake manifold, so even though the throttle body is clean you'll still get gunk on the valves.

And I'm sure that thread on how to do it can't stress enough the preparation. Plastic cover everything , I also used a shop vac to catch most of the blast as it bounces out of the runner. That stuff gets everywhere. Plus don't blast till u have the oil separator installed and after u install it take off all pipes and intercooler and clean them. I had small puddle of oil in my intercooler and my pipes were dirty with oil residue. After the seperator, every time I look, no oil residue at all

So just a little update... I don't have the time to clean the valves for the next two weeks but I went ahead and bought an ELM327 scanner off of ebay. I got it in today and made an attempt to get an inside look as to what's happening to my beloved balt. Unfortunately, I can't "open a port" to connect to the device. Any suggestions? Windows 8. Scanner is wifi connective rather than bluetooth

I think most people buy the bluetooth versions to hook to their Android phone via the Torque app.

I have never tried one with wifi as those are for iPhone. No idea how they hook to computer.

Just an update. The TPS was bad in the TB so a simple TB swap fixed the problem. But now I'm on to a new one. I just started a new thread with the details if anyone could check it out.
