Gearbox froze and start up issue.....

for the past few days when starting my car it would turn on and idle down until stalling.then I would start it again and give it some gas and it ran fine.any ideas? This am a weird thing happened not only did the car stall the first time but after starting the second time the car didn't want to go into any gear or reverse.I literally had to slam it in to first then reverse and first through fifth my whole ride this am once the car was running for about 10 minutes it seems that the gearbox begun to loosen up any ideas with that? Thank you

I hope a more experienced tech swings in on this, but it sounds like you may have a clogged fuel filter or water in the lines. The gearbox issue sounds like a response to the cold weather... how cold is it where you are?

For the gearbox problem .. I live in Quebec and never had any issues with the freezing, so could it be the tranny fluid or something?

I get the frozen tranny problem. Its the shifter cables freezing in place... The plastic sheath surrounding the shifter cable condenses from the cold and holds the cable in place.

Take the cup holder out and let the car warm up for 20 mins on high heat blasting.

I beleive the issue with both problems is fluids.

Depending on how cold it is your gas thickens up unless your using a winter blend and it can make cold starts difficult. Same goes for the Tranny Fluid have you changed it to an aftermarket fluid? I start and drive my car in -20°F weather and drive and while it's a bit harder to change gears for the first bit it's not as bad as your describing (I'm on stock Tranny Fluid).

That makes sense for the tranny problem for sure.

I think I remember delayed starts being an issue for a few on here. It may have been the EVAP solenoid, but I can't remember. Do a search on "extended start."

I've had the trans freeze. 1st gear seems to be worst. After a minute or 2 it starts to loosen up.

I had the starting problem last spring, and got it twice about 2 weeks ago, its getting colder here (Quebec..)

I dont think the tune have anything to do with that, sound like theres not enought fuel going to the engine, tryturning the key ''on'' you will hear the fuel pump,, turn it ''off'' , turn it back on to hear the fuel pump again, then start, if it start without problem you didnt had enought fuel, i tried that and it started better, but now it start fine... i have no idea what s the problem, some said crank positionning sensor. or bad engine oil....

Mine does the same thing with. It seems like if I let my car run for about 3 min before shut off for the night it will fire just fine in the morning.

Mine does it too. I am not going to sit in a frekkin car for 20 mins just so the tranny decides to cooperate every morning before I head off to work... It's going to be under -10 almost every morning for at least the next 2 months up here.
It didn't use to do it, now it does.
If it didn't use to do it, that means there is something that needs fixing
That means they better fix it.

Mine freezes up too. definitely moisture in the shifter cable area that becomes frozen overnight

I believe this is it.

Mine does it. In fact (yes I'm stupid) I bent a rod in the shift linkage and have to replace it. I don't think it's fluids. I mean my moms 15 year old Contour might get a little stiff but mine will freeze absolutely solid as if set in concrete.

lol, mine was frozen solid this morning... I forgot to leave it in neutral *sigh*. I forced it into neutral though. a TWM short shifter really helps with this freezing problem, it doesnt feel like its going to break if I force it. (but it probably will, lol) make sure to keep the car in neutral when parked over night. The temp was 19 degrees F this morning and the shifter felt like it was going to give me frost bite.

Oh and my car had a little hiccup when trying to start this morning!! scarey.

The transmission issue is perfectly normal after sitting through a cold night. Happens often throughout the winter.

Apparently I have the fewest issues of anyone on this board, even though I run it hard on track. I've yet to have any issues. Was under 20F today. I also have a hard time believing that it's the shifter cables. There isn't enough leverage there to prevent you from shifting. It's a little ball and socket joint. There's no way that's going to "freeze up".

If you're hell bent that it's the shifter cables, just pop the ends out and lube them with some white lithium grease, and align the shifter cables properly while you're at it.

^^ If it is the shifter cables, it sounds like they need to be greased.

As for the start up problem, not sure. Possibly a problem with the high pressure fuel pump?

It's the car's 3rd winter & it has never done this even at -30 C; there is a big difference between being stiff and not budging as if it was set in concrete.
As far as I'm concerned, not normal.

Well since my cable was ruined it got replaced Friday.

It's been very cold and all the issues are gone. It's not frozen solid and not even very stiff at all. In fact, it feels even better than when the car was new!!

I'm convinced that some condensation gets between the cable and the sleeve and freezes. I just can't see how it can be the fluid. Mine used to freeze solid at 20 something degrees and it's been in single digits since the cable has been replaced but now with no issues at all.
